Narrated Rifa'ah bin Rafi' (may Allah be pleased with him): He was sitting with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) when a man came, entered the mosque, and prayed. When he finished his prayer, he came and greeted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the people. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "And upon you. Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." So he went back and prayed. We began watching his prayer but could not tell what was wrong with it. When he finished, he came and greeted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the people. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "And upon you. Go back and pray, for you have not prayed." This happened either two or three times. The man said: "I do not know what fault you find in my prayer." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "The prayer of any one of you is not complete until he performs ablution properly as Allah the Exalted has commanded him: he washes his face and his hands up to the elbows, wipes over his head, and washes his feet up to the ankles. Then he says the Takbir, praises Allah, and glorifies Him, and recites from the Quran what Allah has permitted him and what is easy for him. Then he says the Takbir and bows, placing his palms on his knees until his joints settle and relax. Then he says 'Sami Allahu liman hamidah' and stands upright until every bone returns to its place and he straightens his back. Then he says the Takbir and prostrates, placing his forehead firmly" -- Hammam said: and sometimes he said 'his face' -- "on the ground until his joints settle and relax. Then he says the Takbir, raises his head, and sits upright on his seat, straightening his back." He described the prayer in this manner until he finished, then said: "The prayer of any one of you is not complete until he does this."

سیدنا رفاعہ بن رافع رضی اللہ عنہ بیان کرتے ہیں کہ وہ نبی کریمصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمکے پاس بیٹھے ہوئے تھے، ایک شخص مسجد میں داخل ہوا، اس نے نماز پڑھی، جب نماز پوری ہوئی، تو آپ کے پاس آیا اور آپ سمیت سب لوگوں کو سلام کہا، رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے اسے جواب دیا اور فرمایا: واپس جا کر نماز پڑھیں، کیوں کہ آپ نے نماز نہیں پڑھی۔ صحابی کہتے ہیں کہ اس نے واپس جا کر نماز پڑھی، تو ہم اس کی نماز کو دیکھنے لگے ہمیں نہیں پتہ تھا کہ اس کی نماز میں کیا نقص ہے؟ جب نماز پوری ہوئی، تو آپ کے پاس آیا اور آپ سمیت سب لوگوں کو سلام کہا، رسول اللہصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے اسے جواب دیا اور فرمایا: واپس جا کر دوبارہ نماز پڑھیں، کیوں کہ آپ نے نماز نہیں پڑھی۔ دو یا تین مرتبہ آپصلی اللہ علیہ وسلمنے اسی طرح فرمایا، تو اس آدمی نے کہا: مجھے معلوم نہیں کہ آپ میری نماز میں کیا نقص پاتے ہیں؟ فرمایا: اس وقت تک کسی شخص کی نماز مکمل نہیں ہوتی، جب تک اللہ تعالیٰ کے بتائے ہوئے طریقہ کے مطابق اچھی طرح وضو نہ کر لے، اسے چاہیے کہ اپنا چہرہ اور دونوں ہاتھ کہنیوں سمیت دھوئے سر کا مسح کرے اور ٹخنوں سمیت دونوں پاؤں دھوئے، پھر تکبیر کہے، اللہ کی حمد و ثنا اور بزرگی بیان کرے، پھر جس قدر ہو سکے، اللہ تعالیٰ کے حکم کے مطابق قرآن کی تلاوت کرے، پھر تکبیر کہہ کر رکوع کرے اور اپنی ہتھیلیاں گھٹنوں پر رکھے، یہاں تک کہ جوڑ اپنی جگہ پر پہنچ جائیں، پھر«سمع الله لمن حمده»کہہ کر سیدھا کھڑا ہو جائے، یہاں تک کہ ہر ہڈی اپنی جگہ پر آ جائے اور کمر سیدھی ہو جائے، پھر تکبیر کہہ کر سجدہ کرے، تو اپنی پیشانی اچھی طرح زمین پر لگائے (ہمام رحمہ اللہ کہتے ہیں. بعض اوقات پیشانی کی جگہ چہرے کا ذکر کیا ہے) یہاں تک کہ جوڑ اپنی جگہ پہنچ جائیں، پھر تکبیر کہہ کر سر اٹھائے اور اپنی سرین پر سیدھا بیٹھ جائے اور اپنی کمر کو سیدھا کر لے، آپ نے پوری نماز اسی طرح بیان کی، یہاں تک کہ نماز سے فارغ ہو گئے، پھر فرمایا: اس وقت تک کسی کی نماز پوری نہیں ہوتی، جب تک اس طرح نماز نہ پڑھے۔[المنتقى ابن الجارود/كتاب الصلاة/حدیث: 194]
