It is narrated from Hadrat Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be well pleased with him) who said: 'I did not stay behind from the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in any military expedition he undertook, except for Badr. And the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) did not reproach anyone who stayed behind from Badr, as the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) had only set out seeking the caravan, but Quraysh came out to defend their caravan, and they met without prior appointment, as Allah has said. By my life, the most honorable of the witnessed events of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) among the people is indeed Badr, yet I would not wish that I had witnessed it in place of my pledge on the Night of al-Aqabah when we bound ourselves to Islam. I did not stay behind from the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) after that in any military expedition until the expedition of Tabuk, which was the last expedition he undertook. The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) announced to the people that they should prepare for departure, intending that they equip themselves for their military expedition. That was when the shade was pleasant and the fruits were ripe. He would rarely intend a military expedition except that he would allude to another, for he used to say: «War is deception.» For the expedition of Tabuk, the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) wanted the people to properly prepare themselves, and I was at my most comfortable — I had gathered two mounts for myself. Yet I continued thus until the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) set out early in the morning on Thursday, as he loved to set out on Thursday. He departed early in the morning, and I said: I shall go to the market, purchase my gear, and catch up with them. So I went to the market the next day, but some of my affairs proved difficult for me, so I returned and said: I shall return tomorrow, Allah willing, and catch up with them. But some of my affairs again proved difficult for me. I continued thus until sin overcame me and I stayed behind from the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). I began walking in the markets and outskirts of Madinah, and it grieved me that I saw no one who had stayed behind from the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) except a man suspected of hypocrisy. And there was no one who stayed behind but I saw that this would remain hidden for him, as the people were numerous and not recorded in a register. The total number of those who stayed behind from the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was some eighty-odd men. The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) did not mention me until he reached Tabuk. When he reached Tabuk, he said: «What did Ka'b ibn Malik do?» A man from my people said: O Messenger of Allah, his two cloaks and his admiring glances at his sides detained him. Hadrat Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be well pleased with him) said: Evil is what you have said! By Allah, O Prophet of Allah, we know nothing but good about him. When I completed the expedition of Tabuk and returned, drawing near to Madinah, I began thinking about how I could escape the Beloved Prophet's displeasure, seeking the help of every person of sound opinion from my family. When it was said that the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) would arrive in the morning, falsehood left me and I knew that I could escape only through truthfulness. The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) entered in the late morning, prayed two units in the mosque — for whenever he returned from a journey, he would do this: enter the mosque and pray two units therein — then he sat down. Those who had stayed behind began coming to him, swearing oaths and making excuses to him. He would seek forgiveness for them, accept their outward statements, and entrust their secrets to Allah. I entered the mosque, and there he was sitting. When he saw me, he smiled the smile of one who is angry. I came and sat before him. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: «Did you not purchase a mount?» I said: Yes, O Prophet of Allah. He said: «What kept you from me?» I said: By Allah, if I were sitting before anyone other than you among the people, I would have escaped his displeasure by making an excuse, for I have been given skill in argumentation. But I have come to know, O Prophet of Allah, that if I tell you a statement today that you are pleased with but which is false, Allah will soon expose me to you. And by Allah, O Prophet of Allah, I have never been more comfortable or lighter in provision than when I stayed behind from you. The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: «As for this one, he has told you the truth. Stand until Allah decrees concerning you.» So I stood, and men from my people rose after me, reproaching me. They said: By Allah, we have not known you to commit a sin before this. Could you not have excused yourself to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) with an excuse he would accept from you? The seeking of forgiveness by the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) would have come after that. Yet you did not take a stand where we do not know what will be decreed for you. They continued reproaching me until I was about to return and falsify myself. I said: Did anyone else say what I said? They said: Yes, Hilal ibn Umayyah and Murarah ibn Rabi'ah said it. They mentioned two righteous men who had witnessed Badr, in whom there was an example for me. I said: By Allah, I shall never return to him in this matter, nor shall I falsify myself. The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade speaking to us — the three of us. I would go out to the market and no one would speak to me. People became estranged to us until they were not the people we knew, and the walls became estranged to us until they were not the walls we knew, and the earth became estranged to us until it was not the earth we knew. I was the strongest of my companions, so I would go out and wander in the markets. I would come to the mosque and come to the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), give him greetings of peace, and say to myself: Did he move his lips in returning the greeting? When I stood to pray near a pillar and turned toward my prayer, the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) would look at me from the corner of his eye, but when I looked at him, he would turn away from me. My two companions complained and began weeping night and day, not raising their heads. While I was wandering in the markets, a Christian man who had come with food to sell was saying: Who will guide me to Ka'b ibn Malik? People began pointing to me, and he came to me with a letter from the king of Ghassan. In it was: To proceed, it has reached me that your companion has abandoned you and estranged you. You are not in a land of humiliation and loss. Join us and we shall console you. I said: This too is part of the trial. So I heated the oven and burned it therein. When forty nights had passed, a messenger from the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came to me and said: Keep away from your wife. I said: Shall I divorce her? He said: No, but do not go near her. The wife of Hilal ibn Umayyah came and said: O Prophet of Allah, Hilal ibn Umayyah is a weak old man. Do you permit me to serve him? He said: «Yes, but let him not approach you.» She said: O Prophet of Allah, he has no inclination toward anything. He has been lying down weeping night and day since his matter occurred. When the trial became prolonged for me, I climbed into Abu Qatadah's garden — he is my cousin — and greeted him, but he did not return my greeting. I said: I adjure you by Allah, O Abu Qatadah, do you know that I love Allah and His Messenger? He remained silent. I said: I adjure you by Allah, O Abu Qatadah, do you know that I love Allah and His Messenger? He remained silent. I said: I adjure you by Allah, O Abu Qatadah, do you know that I love Allah and His Messenger? He said: Allah and His Messenger know best. I could not control myself and I wept. Then I climbed out of the garden. When fifty nights had passed since the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade speaking to us, I prayed the dawn prayer on the roof of one of our houses, while I was in the state that Allah mentioned: {The earth, vast as it is, became constricted for us, and our souls became constricted for us.} Then I heard a cry from the peak of Mount Sal': Rejoice, O Ka'b ibn Malik! I fell down in prostration and knew that Allah had brought us relief. Then a man came riding a horse to give me glad tidings. The voice was faster than his horse. I gave him my two garments as glad tidings and wore two other garments. Our repentance was revealed to the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in the last third of the night. Umm Salamah said: O Prophet of Allah, shall we not give glad tidings to Ka'b ibn Malik? He said: «Then the people will overwhelm you and prevent you from sleeping the rest of the night.» And Umm Salamah was kind regarding my matter, informing me of my affair. I went to the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), and there he was sitting in the mosque with the Muslims around him, and he was radiant like the radiance of the moon — for whenever he was pleased with a matter, he would become radiant. I came and sat before him. He said: «O Ka'b ibn Malik, rejoice in the best day that has come upon you since your mother gave birth to you.» I said: O Prophet of Allah, is it from Allah or from you? He said: «Rather, from Allah.» Then he recited to them: {Allah has turned in mercy to the Prophet, the Emigrants, and the Helpers} until he reached {He is the Oft-Returning, the Most Merciful.} He said: And concerning us was revealed {Fear Allah and be with the truthful.} I said: O Prophet of Allah, indeed part of my repentance is that I shall speak nothing but truth, and that I divest myself of all my wealth as charity to Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). He said: «Keep some of your wealth for yourself, for that is better for you.» I said: Then I shall keep my share that is in Khaybar. What Allah has bestowed upon me of favor after Islam, greater in my soul than my truthfulness to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) when I told him the truth — myself and my two companions — so that we would not lie and thus perish as they perished. I have not deliberately lied since, and I hope that Allah will preserve me in what remains. Al-Zuhri said: This is what has reached us of the hadith of Ka'b ibn Malik.
اردو ترجمہ
حضرت کعب بن مالک رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے کسی غزوے میں پیچھے نہیں رہا سوائے غزوہ بدر کے۔ اور نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے بدر سے پیچھے رہنے والے کسی کو ملامت نہیں کی، کیونکہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم صرف قافلے کی تلاش میں نکلے تھے، لیکن قریش اپنے قافلے کی حفاظت کے لیے نکلے اور دونوں بغیر کسی وعدے کے ملے، جیسا کہ اللہ نے فرمایا ہے۔ میری قسم! رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے مشاہد میں سب سے زیادہ باعزت بدر ہے، لیکن میں یہ پسند نہیں کروں گا کہ میں اسے شب عقبہ کی بیعت کی جگہ دیکھتا جب ہم نے اسلام پر عہد باندھا۔ میں اس کے بعد نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے کسی غزوے میں پیچھے نہیں رہا یہاں تک کہ غزوہ تبوک آیا جو آخری غزوہ تھا جو آپ نے کیا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے لوگوں کو روانگی کی اطلاع دی اور چاہا کہ وہ اپنے غزوے کی تیاری کریں۔ یہ وہ وقت تھا جب سایہ خوشگوار تھا اور پھل پکے ہوئے تھے۔ اور آپ شاذ و نادر ہی کوئی غزوہ کا ارادہ کرتے مگر دوسری جگہ کا اشارہ دیتے، کیونکہ آپ فرماتے تھے: «جنگ فریب ہے۔» غزوہ تبوک کے لیے نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے چاہا کہ لوگ ٹھیک سے تیاری کریں، اور میں سب سے زیادہ آسودہ تھا — میں نے اپنے لیے دو سواریاں جمع کر لی تھیں۔ پھر بھی میں ایسے ہی رہا یہاں تک کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم جمعرات کی صبح روانہ ہوئے، کیونکہ آپ جمعرات کو نکلنا پسند فرماتے تھے۔ آپ صبح سویرے روانہ ہوئے اور میں نے کہا: میں بازار جاؤں گا، اپنا سامان خریدوں گا اور انہیں پکڑ لوں گا۔ پس میں اگلے دن بازار گیا لیکن میرے کچھ کام مشکل ہو گئے، تو میں واپس آیا اور کہا: کل واپس جاؤں گا ان شاء اللہ اور انہیں پکڑ لوں گا۔ لیکن میرے کچھ کام پھر مشکل ہو گئے۔ میں ایسے ہی رہا یہاں تک کہ گناہ نے مجھے گھیر لیا اور میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے پیچھے رہ گیا۔ میں بازاروں اور مدینہ کے کناروں میں چلنے لگا اور مجھے غم ہوا کہ میں نے کوئی ایسا نہیں دیکھا جو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے پیچھے رہا ہو سوائے کسی ایسے شخص کے جس پر نفاق کا شبہ تھا۔ اور کوئی بھی پیچھے نہیں رہا مگر میں نے دیکھا کہ یہ اس کے لیے چھپ جائے گا، کیونکہ لوگ بہت تھے اور کسی رجسٹر میں درج نہیں تھے۔ کل تعداد ان لوگوں کی جو نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے پیچھے رہے اسّی کچھ آدمی تھے۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے مجھے یاد نہیں کیا یہاں تک کہ تبوک پہنچے۔ جب تبوک پہنچے تو فرمایا: «کعب بن مالک نے کیا کیا؟» میری قوم کے ایک آدمی نے کہا: یا رسول اللہ! اس کے دو چادریں اور اپنی طرفوں میں دیکھنا اسے روک گیا۔ حضرت معاذ بن جبل رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے کہا: برا کہا تم نے! اللہ کی قسم، اے اللہ کے نبی! ہم ان کے بارے میں بھلائی کے سوا کچھ نہیں جانتے۔ جب میں نے غزوہ تبوک مکمل کیا اور واپس آیا، مدینہ کے قریب پہنچا تو میں سوچنے لگا کہ میں نبی کریم کی ناراضگی سے کیسے بچوں، اپنے گھر والوں میں سے ہر عقلمند سے مدد لیتے ہوئے۔ جب کہا گیا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم صبح آ رہے ہیں تو جھوٹ مجھ سے چلا گیا اور میں جان گیا کہ میں صرف سچائی سے بچ سکتا ہوں۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم دیر صبح داخل ہوئے، مسجد میں دو رکعت پڑھی — کیونکہ جب بھی آپ سفر سے واپس آتے تو یہی کرتے: مسجد میں داخل ہوتے اور اس میں دو رکعت پڑھتے — پھر بیٹھ گئے۔ جو پیچھے رہے تھے وہ آپ کے پاس آنے لگے، قسمیں کھا رہے تھے اور عذر پیش کر رہے تھے۔ آپ ان کے لیے مغفرت مانگتے، ان کی ظاہری باتیں قبول کرتے، اور ان کے باطن کو اللہ کے حوالے کرتے۔ میں مسجد میں داخل ہوا اور وہاں آپ بیٹھے ہوئے تھے۔ جب آپ نے مجھے دیکھا تو ناراض شخص کی طرح مسکرائے۔ میں آیا اور آپ کے سامنے بیٹھ گیا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «کیا تم نے سواری نہیں خریدی تھی؟» میں نے کہا: ہاں، اے اللہ کے نبی۔ آپ نے فرمایا: «کس چیز نے تمہیں مجھ سے روکا؟» میں نے کہا: اللہ کی قسم! اگر میں آپ کے علاوہ لوگوں میں سے کسی کے سامنے بیٹھتا تو میں عذر سے اس کی ناراضگی سے نکل جاتا اور مجھے بحث میں مہارت دی گئی ہے۔ لیکن میں جانتا ہوں، اے اللہ کے نبی! کہ اگر میں آج آپ کو کوئی بات بتاؤں جس سے آپ خوش ہوں لیکن وہ جھوٹ ہو تو اللہ عنقریب آپ کو مجھ پر مطلع کر دے گا۔ اور اللہ کی قسم، اے اللہ کے نبی! میں کبھی اس سے زیادہ آسودہ یا ہلکا سامان والا نہیں تھا جب میں آپ سے پیچھے رہا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «جہاں تک اس کا تعلق ہے، اس نے تم سے سچ کہا۔ کھڑے ہو جاؤ یہاں تک کہ اللہ تمہارے بارے میں فیصلہ کرے۔» پس میں کھڑا ہو گیا اور میری قوم کے لوگ میرے پیچھے اٹھے، مجھے ملامت کرتے ہوئے۔ انہوں نے کہا: اللہ کی قسم! ہم نے تمہیں اس سے پہلے کوئی گناہ کرتے نہیں دیکھا۔ کیا تم رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے کوئی عذر پیش نہیں کر سکتے تھے جو آپ قبول کر لیتے؟ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی مغفرت اس کے بعد آ جاتی۔ لیکن تم نے ایسا موقف نہیں لیا جہاں ہم نہیں جانتے کہ تمہارے لیے کیا فیصلہ ہوگا۔ وہ مجھے ملامت کرتے رہے یہاں تک کہ میں واپس جانے اور اپنے آپ کو جھٹلانے کا ارادہ کرنے لگا۔ میں نے کہا: کیا کسی اور نے بھی وہی کہا جو میں نے کہا؟ انہوں نے کہا: ہاں، ہلال بن امیہ اور مرارہ بن ربیعہ نے کہا۔ انہوں نے دو نیک آدمیوں کا ذکر کیا جنہوں نے بدر میں شرکت کی تھی، جن میں میرے لیے نمونہ تھا۔ میں نے کہا: اللہ کی قسم! میں اس معاملے میں کبھی ان کی طرف واپس نہیں جاؤں گا اور نہ اپنے آپ کو جھٹلاؤں گا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ہم سے — ہم تینوں سے — بات کرنے سے منع فرما دیا۔ میں بازار جاتا اور کوئی مجھ سے بات نہیں کرتا۔ لوگ ہم سے اجنبی ہو گئے یہاں تک کہ وہ وہ لوگ نہیں رہے جنہیں ہم جانتے تھے، اور دیواریں ہم سے اجنبی ہو گئیں یہاں تک کہ وہ وہ دیواریں نہیں رہیں جنہیں ہم جانتے تھے، اور زمین ہم سے اجنبی ہو گئی یہاں تک کہ وہ وہ زمین نہیں رہی جسے ہم جانتے تھے۔ میں اپنے ساتھیوں میں سب سے مضبوط تھا، تو میں نکلتا اور بازاروں میں گھومتا۔ میں مسجد آتا اور نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس آتا، آپ کو سلام کرتا اور اپنے آپ سے کہتا: کیا آپ نے سلام کے جواب میں اپنے ہونٹ ہلائے؟ جب میں ستون کے پاس نماز پڑھنے کھڑا ہوتا اور اپنی نماز کی طرف متوجہ ہوتا تو نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم اپنی آنکھ کے کونے سے مجھے دیکھتے، لیکن جب میں آپ کی طرف دیکھتا تو آپ مجھ سے منہ پھیر لیتے۔ میرے دو ساتھی شکایت کرنے لگے اور رات دن روتے رہنے لگے، اپنے سر نہیں اٹھاتے تھے۔ جب میں بازاروں میں گھوم رہا تھا تو ایک عیسائی آدمی جو اپنے کھانے کے ساتھ بیچنے آیا تھا کہہ رہا تھا: کون کعب بن مالک تک میری رہنمائی کرے گا؟ لوگ اس کی طرف میری طرف اشارہ کرنے لگے، اور وہ غسان کے بادشاہ کا خط لے کر میرے پاس آیا۔ اس میں لکھا تھا: اما بعد! مجھے پہنچا ہے کہ تمہارے ساتھی نے تمہیں چھوڑ دیا ہے اور تم سے دوری کی ہے۔ تم ذلت اور ضیاع کی سرزمین میں نہیں ہو۔ ہمارے ساتھ آ جاؤ، ہم تمہیں تسلی دیں گے۔ میں نے کہا: یہ بھی آزمائش کا حصہ ہے۔ پس میں نے تندور گرم کیا اور اسے اس میں جلا دیا۔ جب چالیس راتیں گزر گئیں تو نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کا ایک قاصد میرے پاس آیا اور کہا: اپنی بیوی سے دور رہو۔ میں نے کہا: کیا میں اسے طلاق دے دوں؟ اس نے کہا: نہیں، لیکن اس کے قریب نہ جاؤ۔ ہلال بن امیہ کی بیوی آئی اور کہا: اے اللہ کے نبی! ہلال بن امیہ کمزور بوڑھے ہیں۔ کیا آپ مجھے ان کی خدمت کی اجازت دیتے ہیں؟ آپ نے فرمایا: «ہاں، لیکن وہ تمہارے قریب نہ آئے۔» اس نے کہا: اے اللہ کے نبی! ان میں کسی چیز کی طرف کوئی جھکاؤ نہیں۔ وہ لیٹے ہوئے رات دن روتے رہتے ہیں جب سے ان کا معاملہ ہوا ہے۔ جب آزمائش میرے لیے طویل ہو گئی تو میں ابو قتادہ کے باغ میں داخل ہوا — وہ میرے چچا زاد بھائی ہیں — اور میں نے انہیں سلام کیا لیکن انہوں نے جواب نہیں دیا۔ میں نے کہا: میں آپ کو اللہ کی قسم دیتا ہوں، اے ابو قتادہ! کیا آپ جانتے ہیں کہ میں اللہ اور اس کے رسول سے محبت کرتا ہوں؟ وہ خاموش رہے۔ میں نے کہا: میں آپ کو اللہ کی قسم دیتا ہوں، اے ابو قتادہ! کیا آپ جانتے ہیں کہ میں اللہ اور اس کے رسول سے محبت کرتا ہوں؟ وہ خاموش رہے۔ میں نے کہا: میں آپ کو اللہ کی قسم دیتا ہوں، اے ابو قتادہ! کیا آپ جانتے ہیں کہ میں اللہ اور اس کے رسول سے محبت کرتا ہوں؟ انہوں نے کہا: اللہ اور اس کے رسول بہتر جانتے ہیں۔ میں اپنے آپ پر قابو نہ رکھ سکا اور رو پڑا۔ پھر میں باغ سے باہر نکل گیا۔ جب پچاس راتیں گزر گئیں جب سے نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ہم سے بات کرنے سے منع فرمایا، میں نے اپنے ایک گھر کی چھت پر فجر کی نماز پڑھی، جبکہ میں اس حالت میں تھا جس کا اللہ نے ذکر کیا: {زمین، وسیع ہونے کے باوجود، ہم پر تنگ ہو گئی، اور ہماری جانیں ہم پر تنگ ہو گئیں۔} پھر میں نے سلع پہاڑ کی چوٹی سے ایک آواز سنی: اے کعب بن مالک! خوشخبری ہو! میں سجدے میں گر گیا اور جان گیا کہ اللہ نے ہمیں فرج عطا کیا ہے۔ پھر ایک آدمی گھوڑے پر سوار ہو کر مجھے خوشخبری دینے آیا۔ آواز اس کے گھوڑے سے تیز تھی۔ میں نے اسے خوشخبری کے طور پر اپنے دو کپڑے دیے اور دو دوسرے کپڑے پہنے۔ ہماری توبہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم پر رات کے آخری تہائی میں نازل ہوئی۔ ام سلمہ نے کہا: اے اللہ کے نبی! کیا ہم کعب بن مالک کو خوشخبری نہیں دیں؟ آپ نے فرمایا: «پھر لوگ تم پر حملہ آور ہوں گے اور تمہیں باقی رات سونے سے روکیں گے۔» اور ام سلمہ میرے معاملے میں مہربان تھیں، مجھے میرے معاملے کی خبر دیتی تھیں۔ میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس گیا اور وہاں آپ مسجد میں بیٹھے ہوئے تھے اور آپ کے ارد گرد مسلمان تھے، اور آپ چاند کی روشنی کی طرح چمک رہے تھے — کیونکہ جب بھی آپ کسی بات سے خوش ہوتے تو چمک اٹھتے۔ میں آیا اور آپ کے سامنے بیٹھ گیا۔ آپ نے فرمایا: «اے کعب بن مالک! اس بہترین دن کی خوشخبری ہو جو تم پر آیا ہے جب سے تمہاری ماں نے تمہیں جنم دیا۔» میں نے کہا: اے اللہ کے نبی! کیا یہ اللہ کی طرف سے ہے یا آپ کی طرف سے؟ آپ نے فرمایا: «بلکہ اللہ کی طرف سے۔» پھر آپ نے ان پر تلاوت کی: {بے شک اللہ نے نبی، مہاجرین اور انصار پر توبہ قبول فرمائی} یہاں تک کہ {وہ بہت توبہ قبول کرنے والا، بہت رحم کرنے والا ہے} تک پہنچے۔ آپ نے فرمایا: اور ہمارے بارے میں نازل ہوا {اللہ سے ڈرو اور سچوں کے ساتھ رہو۔} میں نے کہا: اے اللہ کے نبی! بے شک میری توبہ کا حصہ یہ ہے کہ میں صرف سچ بولوں گا، اور یہ کہ میں اپنے تمام مال سے دستبردار ہو جاؤں اللہ اور اس کے رسول صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے لیے صدقہ کے طور پر۔ آپ نے فرمایا: «اپنے لیے کچھ مال رکھو، کیونکہ یہ تمہارے لیے بہتر ہے۔» میں نے کہا: تو میں اپنا حصہ رکھوں گا جو خیبر میں ہے۔ اللہ نے مجھ پر جو نعمت اسلام کے بعد انعام فرمائی ہے، میری جان میں سب سے بڑی میری رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے سچائی ہے جب میں نے آپ سے سچ کہا — میں اور میرے دو ساتھی — تاکہ ہم جھوٹ نہ بولیں اور ہلاک ہو جائیں جیسے وہ ہلاک ہوئے۔ میں نے اس کے بعد جان بوجھ کر کوئی جھوٹ نہیں بولا، اور میں امید کرتا ہوں کہ اللہ مجھے باقی میں محفوظ رکھے گا۔ زہری نے کہا: یہ وہ ہے جو ہم تک حدیث کعب بن مالک سے پہنچی ہے۔
It is narrated from Hadrat Ka'b ibn Malik (may Allah be well pleased with him) who said: 'I did not stay behind from the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in any military expedition he undertook, except for Badr. And the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) did not reproach anyone who stayed behind from Badr, as the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) had only set out seeking the caravan, but Quraysh came out to defend their caravan, and they met without prior appointment, as Allah has said. By my life, the most honorable of the witnessed events of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) among the people is indeed Badr, yet I would not wish that I had witnessed it in place of my pledge on the Night of al-Aqabah when we bound ourselves to Islam. I did not stay behind from the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) after that in any military expedition until the expedition of Tabuk, which was the last expedition he undertook. The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) announced to the people that they should prepare for departure, intending that they equip themselves for their military expedition. That was when the shade was pleasant and the fruits were ripe. He would rarely intend a military expedition except that he would allude to another, for he used to say: «War is deception.» For the expedition of Tabuk, the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) wanted the people to properly prepare themselves, and I was at my most comfortable — I had gathered two mounts for myself. Yet I continued thus until the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) set out early in the morning on Thursday, as he loved to set out on Thursday. He departed early in the morning, and I said: I shall go to the market, purchase my gear, and catch up with them. So I went to the market the next day, but some of my affairs proved difficult for me, so I returned and said: I shall return tomorrow, Allah willing, and catch up with them. But some of my affairs again proved difficult for me. I continued thus until sin overcame me and I stayed behind from the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). I began walking in the markets and outskirts of Madinah, and it grieved me that I saw no one who had stayed behind from the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) except a man suspected of hypocrisy. And there was no one who stayed behind but I saw that this would remain hidden for him, as the people were numerous and not recorded in a register. The total number of those who stayed behind from the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) was some eighty-odd men. The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) did not mention me until he reached Tabuk. When he reached Tabuk, he said: «What did Ka'b ibn Malik do?» A man from my people said: O Messenger of Allah, his two cloaks and his admiring glances at his sides detained him. Hadrat Mu'adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be well pleased with him) said: Evil is what you have said! By Allah, O Prophet of Allah, we know nothing but good about him. When I completed the expedition of Tabuk and returned, drawing near to Madinah, I began thinking about how I could escape the Beloved Prophet's displeasure, seeking the help of every person of sound opinion from my family. When it was said that the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) would arrive in the morning, falsehood left me and I knew that I could escape only through truthfulness. The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) entered in the late morning, prayed two units in the mosque — for whenever he returned from a journey, he would do this: enter the mosque and pray two units therein — then he sat down. Those who had stayed behind began coming to him, swearing oaths and making excuses to him. He would seek forgiveness for them, accept their outward statements, and entrust their secrets to Allah. I entered the mosque, and there he was sitting. When he saw me, he smiled the smile of one who is angry. I came and sat before him. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: «Did you not purchase a mount?» I said: Yes, O Prophet of Allah. He said: «What kept you from me?» I said: By Allah, if I were sitting before anyone other than you among the people, I would have escaped his displeasure by making an excuse, for I have been given skill in argumentation. But I have come to know, O Prophet of Allah, that if I tell you a statement today that you are pleased with but which is false, Allah will soon expose me to you. And by Allah, O Prophet of Allah, I have never been more comfortable or lighter in provision than when I stayed behind from you. The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: «As for this one, he has told you the truth. Stand until Allah decrees concerning you.» So I stood, and men from my people rose after me, reproaching me. They said: By Allah, we have not known you to commit a sin before this. Could you not have excused yourself to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) with an excuse he would accept from you? The seeking of forgiveness by the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) would have come after that. Yet you did not take a stand where we do not know what will be decreed for you. They continued reproaching me until I was about to return and falsify myself. I said: Did anyone else say what I said? They said: Yes, Hilal ibn Umayyah and Murarah ibn Rabi'ah said it. They mentioned two righteous men who had witnessed Badr, in whom there was an example for me. I said: By Allah, I shall never return to him in this matter, nor shall I falsify myself. The Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade speaking to us — the three of us. I would go out to the market and no one would speak to me. People became estranged to us until they were not the people we knew, and the walls became estranged to us until they were not the walls we knew, and the earth became estranged to us until it was not the earth we knew. I was the strongest of my companions, so I would go out and wander in the markets. I would come to the mosque and come to the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), give him greetings of peace, and say to myself: Did he move his lips in returning the greeting? When I stood to pray near a pillar and turned toward my prayer, the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) would look at me from the corner of his eye, but when I looked at him, he would turn away from me. My two companions complained and began weeping night and day, not raising their heads. While I was wandering in the markets, a Christian man who had come with food to sell was saying: Who will guide me to Ka'b ibn Malik? People began pointing to me, and he came to me with a letter from the king of Ghassan. In it was: To proceed, it has reached me that your companion has abandoned you and estranged you. You are not in a land of humiliation and loss. Join us and we shall console you. I said: This too is part of the trial. So I heated the oven and burned it therein. When forty nights had passed, a messenger from the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) came to me and said: Keep away from your wife. I said: Shall I divorce her? He said: No, but do not go near her. The wife of Hilal ibn Umayyah came and said: O Prophet of Allah, Hilal ibn Umayyah is a weak old man. Do you permit me to serve him? He said: «Yes, but let him not approach you.» She said: O Prophet of Allah, he has no inclination toward anything. He has been lying down weeping night and day since his matter occurred. When the trial became prolonged for me, I climbed into Abu Qatadah's garden — he is my cousin — and greeted him, but he did not return my greeting. I said: I adjure you by Allah, O Abu Qatadah, do you know that I love Allah and His Messenger? He remained silent. I said: I adjure you by Allah, O Abu Qatadah, do you know that I love Allah and His Messenger? He remained silent. I said: I adjure you by Allah, O Abu Qatadah, do you know that I love Allah and His Messenger? He said: Allah and His Messenger know best. I could not control myself and I wept. Then I climbed out of the garden. When fifty nights had passed since the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) forbade speaking to us, I prayed the dawn prayer on the roof of one of our houses, while I was in the state that Allah mentioned: {The earth, vast as it is, became constricted for us, and our souls became constricted for us.} Then I heard a cry from the peak of Mount Sal': Rejoice, O Ka'b ibn Malik! I fell down in prostration and knew that Allah had brought us relief. Then a man came riding a horse to give me glad tidings. The voice was faster than his horse. I gave him my two garments as glad tidings and wore two other garments. Our repentance was revealed to the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) in the last third of the night. Umm Salamah said: O Prophet of Allah, shall we not give glad tidings to Ka'b ibn Malik? He said: «Then the people will overwhelm you and prevent you from sleeping the rest of the night.» And Umm Salamah was kind regarding my matter, informing me of my affair. I went to the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), and there he was sitting in the mosque with the Muslims around him, and he was radiant like the radiance of the moon — for whenever he was pleased with a matter, he would become radiant. I came and sat before him. He said: «O Ka'b ibn Malik, rejoice in the best day that has come upon you since your mother gave birth to you.» I said: O Prophet of Allah, is it from Allah or from you? He said: «Rather, from Allah.» Then he recited to them: {Allah has turned in mercy to the Prophet, the Emigrants, and the Helpers} until he reached {He is the Oft-Returning, the Most Merciful.} He said: And concerning us was revealed {Fear Allah and be with the truthful.} I said: O Prophet of Allah, indeed part of my repentance is that I shall speak nothing but truth, and that I divest myself of all my wealth as charity to Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). He said: «Keep some of your wealth for yourself, for that is better for you.» I said: Then I shall keep my share that is in Khaybar. What Allah has bestowed upon me of favor after Islam, greater in my soul than my truthfulness to the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) when I told him the truth — myself and my two companions — so that we would not lie and thus perish as they perished. I have not deliberately lied since, and I hope that Allah will preserve me in what remains. Al-Zuhri said: This is what has reached us of the hadith of Ka'b ibn Malik.
حضرت کعب بن مالک رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے کہ میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے کسی غزوے میں پیچھے نہیں رہا سوائے غزوہ بدر کے۔ اور نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے بدر سے پیچھے رہنے والے کسی کو ملامت نہیں کی، کیونکہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم صرف قافلے کی تلاش میں نکلے تھے، لیکن قریش اپنے قافلے کی حفاظت کے لیے نکلے اور دونوں بغیر کسی وعدے کے ملے، جیسا کہ اللہ نے فرمایا ہے۔ میری قسم! رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے مشاہد میں سب سے زیادہ باعزت بدر ہے، لیکن میں یہ پسند نہیں کروں گا کہ میں اسے شب عقبہ کی بیعت کی جگہ دیکھتا جب ہم نے اسلام پر عہد باندھا۔ میں اس کے بعد نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے کسی غزوے میں پیچھے نہیں رہا یہاں تک کہ غزوہ تبوک آیا جو آخری غزوہ تھا جو آپ نے کیا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے لوگوں کو روانگی کی اطلاع دی اور چاہا کہ وہ اپنے غزوے کی تیاری کریں۔ یہ وہ وقت تھا جب سایہ خوشگوار تھا اور پھل پکے ہوئے تھے۔ اور آپ شاذ و نادر ہی کوئی غزوہ کا ارادہ کرتے مگر دوسری جگہ کا اشارہ دیتے، کیونکہ آپ فرماتے تھے: «جنگ فریب ہے۔» غزوہ تبوک کے لیے نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے چاہا کہ لوگ ٹھیک سے تیاری کریں، اور میں سب سے زیادہ آسودہ تھا — میں نے اپنے لیے دو سواریاں جمع کر لی تھیں۔ پھر بھی میں ایسے ہی رہا یہاں تک کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم جمعرات کی صبح روانہ ہوئے، کیونکہ آپ جمعرات کو نکلنا پسند فرماتے تھے۔ آپ صبح سویرے روانہ ہوئے اور میں نے کہا: میں بازار جاؤں گا، اپنا سامان خریدوں گا اور انہیں پکڑ لوں گا۔ پس میں اگلے دن بازار گیا لیکن میرے کچھ کام مشکل ہو گئے، تو میں واپس آیا اور کہا: کل واپس جاؤں گا ان شاء اللہ اور انہیں پکڑ لوں گا۔ لیکن میرے کچھ کام پھر مشکل ہو گئے۔ میں ایسے ہی رہا یہاں تک کہ گناہ نے مجھے گھیر لیا اور میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے پیچھے رہ گیا۔ میں بازاروں اور مدینہ کے کناروں میں چلنے لگا اور مجھے غم ہوا کہ میں نے کوئی ایسا نہیں دیکھا جو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے پیچھے رہا ہو سوائے کسی ایسے شخص کے جس پر نفاق کا شبہ تھا۔ اور کوئی بھی پیچھے نہیں رہا مگر میں نے دیکھا کہ یہ اس کے لیے چھپ جائے گا، کیونکہ لوگ بہت تھے اور کسی رجسٹر میں درج نہیں تھے۔ کل تعداد ان لوگوں کی جو نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے پیچھے رہے اسّی کچھ آدمی تھے۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے مجھے یاد نہیں کیا یہاں تک کہ تبوک پہنچے۔ جب تبوک پہنچے تو فرمایا: «کعب بن مالک نے کیا کیا؟» میری قوم کے ایک آدمی نے کہا: یا رسول اللہ! اس کے دو چادریں اور اپنی طرفوں میں دیکھنا اسے روک گیا۔ حضرت معاذ بن جبل رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ نے کہا: برا کہا تم نے! اللہ کی قسم، اے اللہ کے نبی! ہم ان کے بارے میں بھلائی کے سوا کچھ نہیں جانتے۔ جب میں نے غزوہ تبوک مکمل کیا اور واپس آیا، مدینہ کے قریب پہنچا تو میں سوچنے لگا کہ میں نبی کریم کی ناراضگی سے کیسے بچوں، اپنے گھر والوں میں سے ہر عقلمند سے مدد لیتے ہوئے۔ جب کہا گیا کہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم صبح آ رہے ہیں تو جھوٹ مجھ سے چلا گیا اور میں جان گیا کہ میں صرف سچائی سے بچ سکتا ہوں۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم دیر صبح داخل ہوئے، مسجد میں دو رکعت پڑھی — کیونکہ جب بھی آپ سفر سے واپس آتے تو یہی کرتے: مسجد میں داخل ہوتے اور اس میں دو رکعت پڑھتے — پھر بیٹھ گئے۔ جو پیچھے رہے تھے وہ آپ کے پاس آنے لگے، قسمیں کھا رہے تھے اور عذر پیش کر رہے تھے۔ آپ ان کے لیے مغفرت مانگتے، ان کی ظاہری باتیں قبول کرتے، اور ان کے باطن کو اللہ کے حوالے کرتے۔ میں مسجد میں داخل ہوا اور وہاں آپ بیٹھے ہوئے تھے۔ جب آپ نے مجھے دیکھا تو ناراض شخص کی طرح مسکرائے۔ میں آیا اور آپ کے سامنے بیٹھ گیا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «کیا تم نے سواری نہیں خریدی تھی؟» میں نے کہا: ہاں، اے اللہ کے نبی۔ آپ نے فرمایا: «کس چیز نے تمہیں مجھ سے روکا؟» میں نے کہا: اللہ کی قسم! اگر میں آپ کے علاوہ لوگوں میں سے کسی کے سامنے بیٹھتا تو میں عذر سے اس کی ناراضگی سے نکل جاتا اور مجھے بحث میں مہارت دی گئی ہے۔ لیکن میں جانتا ہوں، اے اللہ کے نبی! کہ اگر میں آج آپ کو کوئی بات بتاؤں جس سے آپ خوش ہوں لیکن وہ جھوٹ ہو تو اللہ عنقریب آپ کو مجھ پر مطلع کر دے گا۔ اور اللہ کی قسم، اے اللہ کے نبی! میں کبھی اس سے زیادہ آسودہ یا ہلکا سامان والا نہیں تھا جب میں آپ سے پیچھے رہا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: «جہاں تک اس کا تعلق ہے، اس نے تم سے سچ کہا۔ کھڑے ہو جاؤ یہاں تک کہ اللہ تمہارے بارے میں فیصلہ کرے۔» پس میں کھڑا ہو گیا اور میری قوم کے لوگ میرے پیچھے اٹھے، مجھے ملامت کرتے ہوئے۔ انہوں نے کہا: اللہ کی قسم! ہم نے تمہیں اس سے پہلے کوئی گناہ کرتے نہیں دیکھا۔ کیا تم رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے کوئی عذر پیش نہیں کر سکتے تھے جو آپ قبول کر لیتے؟ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی مغفرت اس کے بعد آ جاتی۔ لیکن تم نے ایسا موقف نہیں لیا جہاں ہم نہیں جانتے کہ تمہارے لیے کیا فیصلہ ہوگا۔ وہ مجھے ملامت کرتے رہے یہاں تک کہ میں واپس جانے اور اپنے آپ کو جھٹلانے کا ارادہ کرنے لگا۔ میں نے کہا: کیا کسی اور نے بھی وہی کہا جو میں نے کہا؟ انہوں نے کہا: ہاں، ہلال بن امیہ اور مرارہ بن ربیعہ نے کہا۔ انہوں نے دو نیک آدمیوں کا ذکر کیا جنہوں نے بدر میں شرکت کی تھی، جن میں میرے لیے نمونہ تھا۔ میں نے کہا: اللہ کی قسم! میں اس معاملے میں کبھی ان کی طرف واپس نہیں جاؤں گا اور نہ اپنے آپ کو جھٹلاؤں گا۔ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ہم سے — ہم تینوں سے — بات کرنے سے منع فرما دیا۔ میں بازار جاتا اور کوئی مجھ سے بات نہیں کرتا۔ لوگ ہم سے اجنبی ہو گئے یہاں تک کہ وہ وہ لوگ نہیں رہے جنہیں ہم جانتے تھے، اور دیواریں ہم سے اجنبی ہو گئیں یہاں تک کہ وہ وہ دیواریں نہیں رہیں جنہیں ہم جانتے تھے، اور زمین ہم سے اجنبی ہو گئی یہاں تک کہ وہ وہ زمین نہیں رہی جسے ہم جانتے تھے۔ میں اپنے ساتھیوں میں سب سے مضبوط تھا، تو میں نکلتا اور بازاروں میں گھومتا۔ میں مسجد آتا اور نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس آتا، آپ کو سلام کرتا اور اپنے آپ سے کہتا: کیا آپ نے سلام کے جواب میں اپنے ہونٹ ہلائے؟ جب میں ستون کے پاس نماز پڑھنے کھڑا ہوتا اور اپنی نماز کی طرف متوجہ ہوتا تو نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم اپنی آنکھ کے کونے سے مجھے دیکھتے، لیکن جب میں آپ کی طرف دیکھتا تو آپ مجھ سے منہ پھیر لیتے۔ میرے دو ساتھی شکایت کرنے لگے اور رات دن روتے رہنے لگے، اپنے سر نہیں اٹھاتے تھے۔ جب میں بازاروں میں گھوم رہا تھا تو ایک عیسائی آدمی جو اپنے کھانے کے ساتھ بیچنے آیا تھا کہہ رہا تھا: کون کعب بن مالک تک میری رہنمائی کرے گا؟ لوگ اس کی طرف میری طرف اشارہ کرنے لگے، اور وہ غسان کے بادشاہ کا خط لے کر میرے پاس آیا۔ اس میں لکھا تھا: اما بعد! مجھے پہنچا ہے کہ تمہارے ساتھی نے تمہیں چھوڑ دیا ہے اور تم سے دوری کی ہے۔ تم ذلت اور ضیاع کی سرزمین میں نہیں ہو۔ ہمارے ساتھ آ جاؤ، ہم تمہیں تسلی دیں گے۔ میں نے کہا: یہ بھی آزمائش کا حصہ ہے۔ پس میں نے تندور گرم کیا اور اسے اس میں جلا دیا۔ جب چالیس راتیں گزر گئیں تو نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کا ایک قاصد میرے پاس آیا اور کہا: اپنی بیوی سے دور رہو۔ میں نے کہا: کیا میں اسے طلاق دے دوں؟ اس نے کہا: نہیں، لیکن اس کے قریب نہ جاؤ۔ ہلال بن امیہ کی بیوی آئی اور کہا: اے اللہ کے نبی! ہلال بن امیہ کمزور بوڑھے ہیں۔ کیا آپ مجھے ان کی خدمت کی اجازت دیتے ہیں؟ آپ نے فرمایا: «ہاں، لیکن وہ تمہارے قریب نہ آئے۔» اس نے کہا: اے اللہ کے نبی! ان میں کسی چیز کی طرف کوئی جھکاؤ نہیں۔ وہ لیٹے ہوئے رات دن روتے رہتے ہیں جب سے ان کا معاملہ ہوا ہے۔ جب آزمائش میرے لیے طویل ہو گئی تو میں ابو قتادہ کے باغ میں داخل ہوا — وہ میرے چچا زاد بھائی ہیں — اور میں نے انہیں سلام کیا لیکن انہوں نے جواب نہیں دیا۔ میں نے کہا: میں آپ کو اللہ کی قسم دیتا ہوں، اے ابو قتادہ! کیا آپ جانتے ہیں کہ میں اللہ اور اس کے رسول سے محبت کرتا ہوں؟ وہ خاموش رہے۔ میں نے کہا: میں آپ کو اللہ کی قسم دیتا ہوں، اے ابو قتادہ! کیا آپ جانتے ہیں کہ میں اللہ اور اس کے رسول سے محبت کرتا ہوں؟ وہ خاموش رہے۔ میں نے کہا: میں آپ کو اللہ کی قسم دیتا ہوں، اے ابو قتادہ! کیا آپ جانتے ہیں کہ میں اللہ اور اس کے رسول سے محبت کرتا ہوں؟ انہوں نے کہا: اللہ اور اس کے رسول بہتر جانتے ہیں۔ میں اپنے آپ پر قابو نہ رکھ سکا اور رو پڑا۔ پھر میں باغ سے باہر نکل گیا۔ جب پچاس راتیں گزر گئیں جب سے نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے ہم سے بات کرنے سے منع فرمایا، میں نے اپنے ایک گھر کی چھت پر فجر کی نماز پڑھی، جبکہ میں اس حالت میں تھا جس کا اللہ نے ذکر کیا: {زمین، وسیع ہونے کے باوجود، ہم پر تنگ ہو گئی، اور ہماری جانیں ہم پر تنگ ہو گئیں۔} پھر میں نے سلع پہاڑ کی چوٹی سے ایک آواز سنی: اے کعب بن مالک! خوشخبری ہو! میں سجدے میں گر گیا اور جان گیا کہ اللہ نے ہمیں فرج عطا کیا ہے۔ پھر ایک آدمی گھوڑے پر سوار ہو کر مجھے خوشخبری دینے آیا۔ آواز اس کے گھوڑے سے تیز تھی۔ میں نے اسے خوشخبری کے طور پر اپنے دو کپڑے دیے اور دو دوسرے کپڑے پہنے۔ ہماری توبہ نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم پر رات کے آخری تہائی میں نازل ہوئی۔ ام سلمہ نے کہا: اے اللہ کے نبی! کیا ہم کعب بن مالک کو خوشخبری نہیں دیں؟ آپ نے فرمایا: «پھر لوگ تم پر حملہ آور ہوں گے اور تمہیں باقی رات سونے سے روکیں گے۔» اور ام سلمہ میرے معاملے میں مہربان تھیں، مجھے میرے معاملے کی خبر دیتی تھیں۔ میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے پاس گیا اور وہاں آپ مسجد میں بیٹھے ہوئے تھے اور آپ کے ارد گرد مسلمان تھے، اور آپ چاند کی روشنی کی طرح چمک رہے تھے — کیونکہ جب بھی آپ کسی بات سے خوش ہوتے تو چمک اٹھتے۔ میں آیا اور آپ کے سامنے بیٹھ گیا۔ آپ نے فرمایا: «اے کعب بن مالک! اس بہترین دن کی خوشخبری ہو جو تم پر آیا ہے جب سے تمہاری ماں نے تمہیں جنم دیا۔» میں نے کہا: اے اللہ کے نبی! کیا یہ اللہ کی طرف سے ہے یا آپ کی طرف سے؟ آپ نے فرمایا: «بلکہ اللہ کی طرف سے۔» پھر آپ نے ان پر تلاوت کی: {بے شک اللہ نے نبی، مہاجرین اور انصار پر توبہ قبول فرمائی} یہاں تک کہ {وہ بہت توبہ قبول کرنے والا، بہت رحم کرنے والا ہے} تک پہنچے۔ آپ نے فرمایا: اور ہمارے بارے میں نازل ہوا {اللہ سے ڈرو اور سچوں کے ساتھ رہو۔} میں نے کہا: اے اللہ کے نبی! بے شک میری توبہ کا حصہ یہ ہے کہ میں صرف سچ بولوں گا، اور یہ کہ میں اپنے تمام مال سے دستبردار ہو جاؤں اللہ اور اس کے رسول صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے لیے صدقہ کے طور پر۔ آپ نے فرمایا: «اپنے لیے کچھ مال رکھو، کیونکہ یہ تمہارے لیے بہتر ہے۔» میں نے کہا: تو میں اپنا حصہ رکھوں گا جو خیبر میں ہے۔ اللہ نے مجھ پر جو نعمت اسلام کے بعد انعام فرمائی ہے، میری جان میں سب سے بڑی میری رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے سچائی ہے جب میں نے آپ سے سچ کہا — میں اور میرے دو ساتھی — تاکہ ہم جھوٹ نہ بولیں اور ہلاک ہو جائیں جیسے وہ ہلاک ہوئے۔ میں نے اس کے بعد جان بوجھ کر کوئی جھوٹ نہیں بولا، اور میں امید کرتا ہوں کہ اللہ مجھے باقی میں محفوظ رکھے گا۔ زہری نے کہا: یہ وہ ہے جو ہم تک حدیث کعب بن مالک سے پہنچی ہے۔
