[Machine] We went with the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم on the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa'a from a place full of palm trees. One of the Muslims happened to approach a woman from the polytheists and took her, then when the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم left with the caravan, he went to her husband who was absent. When he was informed of the news, he swore not to stop shedding the blood of the companions of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم until it settled in his heart. He then went to follow the traces of the Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم. The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم stopped at a place and said, "Who will guard us tonight?" A man from the Emigrants and a man from the Helpers came forward and said, "We will, O Messenger of Allah." He said, "Then be at the mouth of the valley." The Messenger of Allah صلى الله عليه وسلم and his companions had settled at the valley. When the two men reached the mouth of the valley, the Helper asked the Emigrant, "Which part of the night do you prefer for me to guard?" He said, "I prefer you to guard the first part." So the Emigrant rested, and the Helper started to pray. Then the husband of the woman came, and when he saw a person, he recognized him as the lord of his people, so he shot an arrow at him. The Helper withdrew the arrow and put it in himself, and he remained standing in prayer. Then the husband tried to shoot the Helper with another arrow, but the Helper withdrew it and put it in himself, and he remained standing in prayer. Then he tried for the third time, but this time the Helper allowed it to hit him, then he performed a prostration and alerted his companion, saying, "Sit down, I have established myself." He then jumped up, and when the man saw them, he realized that he had made a vow regarding them, so he ran away. When the Emigrant saw the blood on the Helper from the injuries inflicted by the arrows, he said, "Glory be to Allah! Why didn't you call me when he first shot you?" The Helper replied, "I was in the middle of reciting a surah and I did not want to interrupt it until I completed it. When he continued to shoot me, I performed a prostration and warned you. Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, Ahmad ibn Abd al-Jabbar narrated to us, Yunus ibn Bukayr narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Ishaq narrated to us, Sadaqa ibn Yasar narrated to me from Ibn Jabir — and he is 'Aqil ibn Jabir, as named by Salama al-Abrash — from Hadrat Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be well pleased with him) who said: 'We set out with the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) on the expedition of Dhat al-Riqa' from Nakhl. A Muslim man captured a polytheist woman. When the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) returned with the caravan, her husband came — he had been absent. When he was informed, he swore he would not stop until he shed the blood of one of the Companions of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). He set out following the tracks of the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stopped at a place and asked: Who will guard us this night? A man from the Emigrants and a man from the Ansar volunteered and said: We will, O Messenger of Allah. He stated: Then be at the mouth of the mountain pass. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) and his Companions had descended into the pass of the valley. When the two men went to the mouth of the pass, the Ansari said to the Emigrant: Which part of the night would you prefer me to take? He said: Take the first part for me. So the Emigrant lay down and the Ansari stood in prayer. The woman's husband came, and when he saw the man's figure, he recognized him as the sentinel of the people. He shot him with an arrow and struck him. The Ansari pulled out the arrow and remained standing in prayer. Then he shot him with another arrow, which struck him. He pulled it out and remained standing in prayer. Then he shot him a third time, striking him. He pulled it out, then bowed, then woke his companion saying: Sit up, for I have been hit. The Emigrant jumped up, and when the attacker saw them both, he knew he had been noticed and fled. When the Emigrant saw the blood on the Ansari from the arrow wounds, he said: Glory be to Allah! Why did you not wake me the first time he shot you? The Ansari said: I was reciting a surah and did not wish to cut it short before completing it. When he kept shooting me, I bowed and alerted you. By Allah, had it not been for a frontier post that the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) ordered me to guard, I would have let my soul depart before I cut it short or completed it.'

ابو العباس محمد بن یعقوب نے ہمیں حدیث بیان کی، احمد بن عبد الجبار نے ہمیں حدیث بیان کی، یونس بن بکیر نے ہمیں حدیث بیان کی، محمد بن اسحاق نے ہمیں حدیث بیان کی، صدقہ بن یسار نے مجھے ابن جابر سے حدیث بیان کی — اور وہ عقیل بن جابر ہیں جیسا کہ سلمہ الابرش نے نام لیا — حضرت جابر بن عبد اللہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے، فرمایا: ہم رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے ساتھ غزوۂ ذات الرقاع میں نخل سے نکلے۔ مسلمانوں میں سے ایک شخص نے مشرکین کی ایک عورت کو پکڑ لیا۔ جب رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم واپس ہوئے تو اس کا شوہر آیا جو غائب تھا۔ جب اسے خبر ملی تو اس نے قسم کھائی کہ وہ اصحابِ رسول اللہ میں سے کسی کا خون بہائے بغیر نہ رکے گا۔ وہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کے نقشِ قدم کی تلاش میں نکلا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم ایک جگہ اترے اور ارشاد فرمایا: آج رات ہماری حفاظت کون کرے گا؟ ایک مہاجر اور ایک انصاری آگے بڑھے اور عرض کیا: ہم، یا رسول اللہ۔ ارشاد فرمایا: تم درّے کے دہانے پر رہو۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم اور آپ کے صحابہ وادی کے درّے میں اترے تھے۔ جب دونوں درّے کے دہانے پر پہنچے تو انصاری نے مہاجر سے کہا: رات کا کون سا حصہ تمہیں پسند ہے کہ میں سنبھال لوں؟ فرمایا: مجھے پہلا حصہ سنبھال لو۔ مہاجر لیٹ گئے اور انصاری نماز میں کھڑے ہو گئے۔ عورت کا شوہر آیا، جب اس نے شخص کا سایہ دیکھا تو پہچان لیا کہ یہ قوم کا نگہبان ہے۔ اس نے تیر مارا جو اُن میں لگا۔ انصاری نے تیر نکالا اور قائم رہے نماز پڑھتے رہے۔ پھر دوسرا تیر مارا جو لگا، انہوں نے نکالا اور قائم رہے نماز پڑھتے رہے۔ پھر تیسری بار مارا جو لگا، انہوں نے نکالا پھر رکوع کیا، پھر اپنے ساتھی کو جگایا اور کہا: بیٹھ جاؤ، مجھے لگ گیا ہے۔ مہاجر اچھل کر اٹھے۔ جب اُس آدمی نے دونوں کو دیکھا تو سمجھ گیا کہ اسے بھانپ لیا گیا ہے، تو بھاگ گیا۔ جب مہاجر نے انصاری پر تیروں کے زخموں سے خون دیکھا تو کہا: سبحان اللہ! جب پہلی بار تیر لگا تو مجھے کیوں نہ جگایا؟ فرمایا: میں ایک سورت پڑھ رہا تھا اور پوری کیے بغیر چھوڑنا نہیں چاہتا تھا۔ جب اس نے مسلسل تیر مارے تو میں نے رکوع کیا اور تمہیں خبر دی۔ اللہ کی قسم! اگر وہ چوکی نہ ہوتی جس کی حفاظت کا رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے مجھے حکم دیا تھا تو سورت چھوڑنے یا پوری کرنے سے پہلے میری جان نکل جاتی۔
