Hadrat Rabi'a ibn Ka'b al-Aslami (may Allah be well pleased with him) narrated: I used to serve the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him). He stated to me: 'O Rabi'a, will you not marry?' I submitted: 'No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah! I do not wish to marry. I have nothing to sustain a wife, and I do not wish anything to distract me from you.' He turned away from me. Then after some time he stated to me again: 'O Rabi'a, will you not marry?' I submitted: 'No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah! I do not wish to marry. I have nothing to sustain a wife, and I do not wish anything to distract me from you.' He turned away from me. Then I reflected within myself and said: By Allah, O Messenger of Allah, you know better what is good for me in this world and the Hereafter. And I said to myself: If he asks me a third time, I will surely say yes. So he stated to me the third time: 'O Rabi'a, will you not marry?' I submitted: 'Yes, O Messenger of Allah, command me as you wish.' He stated: 'Go to such-and-such family — a clan of the Ansar who had been somewhat lax toward the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) — and say to them: The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) sends you greetings of peace and commands you to give Rabi'a in marriage to such-and-such woman among you.' So I went to them and told them that. They said: 'Welcome to the Messenger of Allah and to the envoy of the Messenger of Allah! By Allah, the envoy of the Messenger of Allah shall not return except with his need fulfilled.' So they honoured me, married me, and were most gracious to me, and did not even ask me for proof. I returned saddened. The Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) asked: 'What is the matter with you?' I submitted: 'O Messenger of Allah, I came to honourable people who married me, honoured me, and were most gracious to me, and did not even ask me for proof. But where will I get the mahr?' So the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said to Burayda al-Aslami: 'O Burayda, collect for him the weight of a date-stone in gold.' So they collected for him the weight of a date-stone in gold. Then the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'Take this to them and say: This is her mahr.' So I took it to them and said: 'This is her mahr.' They said: 'Much and good!' and accepted and were satisfied with it. Then I said: 'Where shall I hold the walima?' He stated: 'O Burayda, collect for him enough for a sheep.' So they collected for him a fat ram. Then the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) stated: 'Go to A'isha and tell her to look at the basket that has food and send it.' So I went to A'isha and told her that. She said: 'Here is the basket; in it are seven sa' of barley. By Allah, we have no food besides it.' So I took it and brought it to the Beloved Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him), who stated: 'Take it to them and tell them to make bread from it.' So I went with it and the ram. They accepted the food and said: 'You take care of the ram for us.' Some people of Aslam came and slaughtered it, skinned it, and cooked it. So in the morning we had bread and meat, and I held the walima and invited the Beloved Messenger of Allah (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him).

حضرت ربیعہ بن کعب اسلمی رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہ سے روایت ہے: میں نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی خدمت کیا کرتا تھا۔ آپ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے مجھ سے ارشاد فرمایا: اے ربیعہ! کیا تم شادی نہیں کرو گے؟ میں نے عرض کیا: نہیں، اللہ کی قسم یا رسول اللہ! میں شادی نہیں کرنا چاہتا۔ میرے پاس اتنا نہیں جو عورت کی کفالت کر سکے اور میں نہیں چاہتا کہ کوئی چیز مجھے آپ سے مشغول کرے۔ آپ نے مجھ سے اعراض فرمایا۔ پھر کچھ عرصے بعد مجھ سے پھر ارشاد فرمایا: اے ربیعہ! کیا تم شادی نہیں کرو گے؟ میں نے عرض کیا: نہیں، اللہ کی قسم یا رسول اللہ! میں شادی نہیں کرنا چاہتا۔ میرے پاس عورت کی کفالت کا سامان نہیں اور میں نہیں چاہتا کہ کوئی چیز مجھے آپ سے مشغول کرے۔ آپ نے مجھ سے اعراض فرمایا۔ پھر میں نے اپنے آپ سے غور کیا اور کہا: اللہ کی قسم یا رسول اللہ! آپ بہتر جانتے ہیں کہ دنیا و آخرت میں میری بہتری کس میں ہے۔ اور میں نے دل میں کہا: اگر آپ تیسری بار پوچھیں گے تو میں ضرور ہاں کہوں گا۔ تو آپ نے تیسری بار ارشاد فرمایا: اے ربیعہ! کیا تم شادی نہیں کرو گے؟ میں نے عرض کیا: جی ہاں یا رسول اللہ! جو آپ چاہیں حکم فرمائیں۔ آپ نے فرمایا: فلاں خاندان کے پاس جاؤ — انصار کا ایک قبیلہ جو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم سے کچھ سست تھا — اور ان سے کہو کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم تمہیں سلام بھیجتے ہیں اور حکم فرماتے ہیں کہ ربیعہ کا نکاح فلاں عورت سے کر دو۔ میں ان کے پاس گیا اور یہی کہا۔ انہوں نے کہا: رسول اللہ اور رسول اللہ کے قاصد کو خوش آمدید! اللہ کی قسم رسول اللہ کا قاصد اپنی حاجت پوری کیے بغیر نہیں لوٹے گا۔ انہوں نے میری عزت کی، نکاح کر دیا، لطف و کرم کیا اور مجھ سے گواہی بھی نہ مانگی۔ میں غمگین ہو کر لوٹا۔ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے پوچھا: کیا بات ہے؟ میں نے عرض کیا: یا رسول اللہ! میں معزز لوگوں کے پاس گیا، انہوں نے نکاح کر دیا، عزت کی اور لطف و کرم کیا اور گواہی بھی نہ مانگی، لیکن مہر کہاں سے لاؤں؟ تو رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے بریدہ اسلمی سے فرمایا: اے بریدہ! اس کے لیے ایک گٹھلی بھر سونا جمع کرو۔ تو انہوں نے گٹھلی بھر سونا جمع کر دیا۔ پھر نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: یہ ان کے پاس لے جاؤ اور کہو یہ اس کا مہر ہے۔ میں لے گیا اور کہا: یہ اس کا مہر ہے۔ انہوں نے کہا: بہت اچھا اور پاکیزہ ہے! قبول کیا اور راضی ہو گئے۔ میں نے کہا: ولیمہ کہاں سے کروں؟ آپ نے فرمایا: اے بریدہ! اس کے لیے ایک بکری کا بندوبست کرو۔ تو انہوں نے ایک موٹا مینڈھا جمع کر دیا۔ اور نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم نے فرمایا: عائشہ کے پاس جاؤ اور کہو کہ ٹوکری میں جو کھانا ہے وہ بھیج دیں۔ میں حضرت عائشہ رضی اللہ تعالیٰ عنہا کے پاس گیا اور یہی کہا۔ انہوں نے فرمایا: وہ ٹوکری ہے اس میں سات صاع جَو ہیں، اللہ کی قسم ہمارے پاس اس کے سوا کوئی کھانا نہیں۔ میں نے لے لی اور نبی کریم صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کی خدمت میں لایا۔ آپ نے فرمایا: یہ ان کے پاس لے جاؤ اور کہو اس سے روٹی بنا لیں۔ میں یہ اور مینڈھا لے کر گیا۔ انہوں نے کھانا قبول کیا اور کہا: تم مینڈھے کا بندوبست کر لو۔ قبیلہ اسلم کے کچھ لوگ آئے، ذبح کیا، کھال اتاری اور پکایا۔ صبح ہمارے پاس روٹی اور گوشت تھا، میں نے ولیمہ کیا اور رسول اللہ صلی اللہ تعالیٰ علیہ وآلہ وسلم کو دعوت دی۔
