Zayd al-Ammi narrated from one of the jurists who said: "O seeker of knowledge, act upon your knowledge, and give the surplus of your wealth, and withhold the surplus of your speech except for a hadith that benefits you with your Lord. O seeker of knowledge, what you have learned and not acted upon will cut off your argument and your excuse before your Lord when you meet Him. O seeker of knowledge, what you have been commanded of obedience to Allah should occupy you from what you have been forbidden of disobedience to Allah. O seeker of knowledge, do not be strong in the work of others and weak in your own work. O seeker of knowledge, do not let what belongs to others occupy you from what belongs to you. O seeker of knowledge, sit with the scholars, press close to them and listen to them, and leave arguing with them. O seeker of knowledge, honor the scholars for their knowledge, and consider the ignorant as lesser for their ignorance, but do not distance them — rather bring them near and teach them. O seeker of knowledge, do not narrate a hadith in a gathering until you understand it, and do not answer a man regarding his words until you know what he said to you. O seeker of knowledge, do not be deceived by Allah, and do not be deceived by people. For deception regarding Allah is abandoning His commands, and deception regarding people is following their desires. Beware from Allah of what He has warned you about regarding Himself, and beware of people's tribulations. O seeker of knowledge, the light of day is not complete without the sun; likewise, wisdom is not complete without obedience to Allah. O seeker of knowledge, crops do not grow without water and soil; likewise, faith does not thrive without knowledge and action. O seeker of knowledge, every traveler takes provisions, and he will find what he provisioned when he needs it. Likewise, every worker will find in the Hereafter what he worked in this world. O seeker of knowledge, when Allah urges you toward His worship, know that He only intends to show you His honor toward you, so do not turn to other than Him, lest you go from His honor to His humiliation. O seeker of knowledge, carrying stones and iron is easier upon you than narrating to one who does not understand your words. The example of one who narrates to someone who does not understand is like one who calls the dead and sets a table for the people of the graves."

زید العمی نے بعض فقہاء سے روایت کیا کہ انہوں نے فرمایا: "اے طالب علم! اپنے علم پر عمل کرو، اپنے مال کا فاضل حصہ دے دو، اور اپنی زبان سے فضول بات بند رکھو سوائے ایسی حدیث کے جو تمہارے رب کے پاس تمہیں فائدہ دے۔ اے طالب علم! جو تم نے سیکھا اور اس پر عمل نہ کیا وہ تمہارے رب کے سامنے تمہاری حجت اور عذر کاٹ دے گا جب تم اس سے ملو گے۔ اے طالب علم! اللہ کی اطاعت جس کا تمہیں حکم دیا گیا ہے وہ تمہیں اللہ کی نافرمانی سے روکے جس سے منع کیا گیا ہے۔ اے طالب علم! دوسروں کے کام میں مضبوط اور اپنے کام میں کمزور نہ بنو۔ اے طالب علم! جو دوسروں کا ہے وہ تمہیں اپنے کام سے نہ روکے۔ اے طالب علم! علماء کے ساتھ بیٹھو، ان کے قریب رہو اور ان سے سنو، اور ان سے بحث چھوڑ دو۔ اے طالب علم! علماء کی ان کے علم کی وجہ سے تعظیم کرو، اور جاہلوں کو ان کی جہالت کی وجہ سے حقیر سمجھو، لیکن انہیں دور نہ کرو بلکہ قریب لاؤ اور سکھاؤ۔ اے طالب علم! کسی مجلس میں حدیث بیان نہ کرو جب تک اسے سمجھ نہ لو، اور کسی کی بات کا جواب نہ دو جب تک یہ نہ جان لو کہ اس نے تم سے کیا کہا۔ اے طالب علم! اللہ کے بارے میں دھوکے میں نہ رہو اور نہ لوگوں کے بارے میں۔ اللہ کے بارے میں دھوکا اس کا حکم چھوڑنا ہے اور لوگوں کے بارے میں دھوکا ان کی خواہشات کی پیروی ہے۔ اے طالب علم! بے شک دن کی روشنی سورج کے بغیر مکمل نہیں ہوتی، اسی طرح حکمت اللہ کی اطاعت کے بغیر مکمل نہیں ہوتی۔ اے طالب علم! بے شک فصل پانی اور مٹی کے بغیر نہیں اگتی، اسی طرح ایمان علم اور عمل کے بغیر درست نہیں ہوتا۔ اے طالب علم! ہر مسافر زادراہ لیتا ہے اور جب ضرورت پڑے گی تو جو لیا ہے وہی پائے گا۔ اسی طرح ہر عمل کرنے والا آخرت میں اپنا وہی عمل پائے گا جو دنیا میں کیا۔ اے طالب علم! جب اللہ تمہیں اپنی عبادت پر ابھارے تو جان لو کہ وہ تمہیں اپنے ہاں تمہاری عزت دکھانا چاہتا ہے، پس اس کے سوا کسی اور کی طرف نہ مڑو ورنہ اس کی عزت سے اس کی ذلت کی طرف لوٹ جاؤ گے۔ اے طالب علم! پتھر اور لوہا اٹھانا تمہارے لیے اس سے آسان ہے کہ تم ایسے شخص کو حدیث سناؤ جو تمہاری بات نہ سمجھے۔ جو نہ سمجھنے والے کو حدیث سنائے اس کی مثال ایسی ہے جیسے مردے کو پکارے اور قبر والوں کے لیے دسترخوان بچھائے۔"
