Muhammad ibn Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us: Abu Abdullah Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us: Ibrahim ibn Abdullah al-Sa'di and Muhammad ibn Ahmad ibn Anas al-Qurashi narrated to us: Abu Asim al-Nabil narrated to us: Abd al-Hamid ibn Ja'far narrated to us: Salih ibn Abi Arib narrated to me from Kathir ibn Murra, from Awf ibn Malik who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) went out with a staff, and there were hanging date clusters, among them a cluster of dried worthless dates. He poked that cluster with his staff and said: 'It would not harm the owner of this if he gave in charity something better than this. Indeed, the owner of this will eat dried worthless dates on the Day of Resurrection.' Then he said: 'By Allah, you shall leave them neglected for forty years for the scavengers.' Then he said: 'Do you know what the scavengers are?' They said: 'Allah and His Messenger know best.' He said: 'Birds and beasts.'
