Abu 'Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us... from Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah... from Waki', from Sufyan, from Ja'far ibn Muhammad, from his father, from Jabir who said: 'The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) used to address the people, praising Allah and extolling Him as He deserves, then he would say: Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide; and whomever He leads astray, none can guide. The best of speech is the Book of Allah, and the best of guidance is the guidance of Muhammad. The worst of affairs are newly-invented matters; every newly-invented matter is an innovation, and every innovation is misguidance. And when he mentioned the Hour, his voice would rise, his cheeks would redden, and his anger would intensify, as if he were a warner of an approaching army, saying: It has reached you this morning, this evening! Whoever leaves behind wealth, it is for his heirs; and whoever leaves behind a debt or dependents, it is upon me and my responsibility. I am the guardian of the believers.'
