and they differed on that day about ˹the spelling of the word˺ tābūt. Zayd said that ˹it should be˺ tābuh, while Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ and Ibn Zubayr said that ˹it should be˺ tābūt. They then escalated their disagreement to ʿUthmān ؓ so he said: Write it as tābūt because it is in their dialect. أنبأ أَبُو سَهْلٍ ثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ حَبِيبٍ ثنا إِسْمَاعِيلُ بْنُ إِسْحَاقَ ثنا أَبُو الْوَلِيدِ عَنْ إِبْرَاهِيمَ بْنِ سَعْدٍ قَالَ قَالَ ابْنُ شِهَابٍ وَاخْتَلَفُوا يَوْمَئِذٍ فِي التَّابُوتِ فقَالَ زَيْدٌ التَّابُوه وَقَالَ سَعِيدُ بْنُ الْعَاصِ وَابْنُ الزُّبَيْرِ التَّابُوتُ فَرَفَعُوا اخْتِلَافَهُمْ إِلَى عُثْمَانَ ؓ فَقَالَ اكْتُبُوهُ التَّابُوتُ فَإِنَّهُ بِلِسَانِهِمْ

Abu Sahl informed us... Ibn Shihab said: 'They disagreed that day about the word al-tabut. Zayd said al-tabuh, while Sa'id ibn al-As and Ibn al-Zubayr said al-tabut. They referred their disagreement to Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him), who said: Write it as al-tabut, for it is in their dialect.'
