Abu Nasr Ahmad ibn Ali ibn Ahmad al-Qadi informed us... from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Whoever prays a prayer without reciting the Opening of the Book [al-Fatihah] in it, it is deficient, it is deficient — incomplete.' He said: 'I said: O Abu Hurayrah, sometimes I am behind the imam.' He squeezed my arm and said: 'O Persian, recite it silently to yourself, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) say that Allah says: I have divided the prayer between Myself and My servant into two halves. Half is for Me and half is for My servant, and My servant shall have what he asks for. The servant says: All praise is due to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Allah says: My servant has praised Me. The servant says: The Most Merciful, the Most Compassionate. Allah says: My servant has glorified Me. The servant says: Master of the Day of Judgment. Allah says: My servant has exalted Me. This verse is between Me and My servant. The servant says: You alone we worship, and You alone we ask for help. This verse is between Me and him. The rest of the surah is for My servant, and My servant shall have what he asks for. The servant says: Guide us to the straight path — to the end of the surah.'
