Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, Abu al-Abbas, who is al-Asamm, informed us, al-Rabi' informed us. Al-Shafi'i said: "It has been narrated that a man who was a relative of Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him and he asked him about his livelihood. He mentioned to him the income of a bathhouse and the earnings of a cupper or two cuppers. He said: 'Your earnings are indeed filthy' - or he said 'dirty' or 'lowly' or a similar word."
