As for the hadith that Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us of, Ali ibn Hamshad al-Adl narrated to us, Bishr ibn Musa al-Asadi narrated to us, Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr al-Humaydi narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us from Amr ibn Dinar, who said: "I said to Jabir ibn Zayd: 'They claim that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited the meat of domestic donkeys at the time of Khaybar.' He said: 'Al-Hakam ibn Amr used to say that from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), but the Sea - meaning Ibn Abbas - rejected that and recited: {Say: I do not find in what has been revealed to me anything forbidden} [al-An'am 145] the verse. The people of the pre-Islamic era used to leave things out of disgust, then Allah Most High revealed His Book and clarified what is lawful and what is forbidden. What He made lawful is lawful, what He made forbidden is forbidden, and what He was silent about is pardoned.' Then he recited this verse: {Say: I do not find in what has been revealed to me anything forbidden for one who eats it, except it be dead meat, or blood poured forth, or the flesh of swine} [al-An'am 145]." Al-Bukhari included the beginning of it in the Sahih from Ali ibn al-Madini from Sufyan. Had Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) known that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had definitively prohibited it, he would not have turned to anything else, but he did not know of it.
