Abu Bakr Ahmad ibn al-Hasan the judge and Abu Zakariyya ibn Abi Ishaq al-Muzakki said: Abu al-'Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub narrated to us, al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman narrated to us, al-Shafi'i narrated to us, Malik narrated to us from Ibn Shihab, from Salim, from his father, that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) used to collect from the Nabataeans half of a tenth on wheat and olive oil — intending thereby to increase the supply brought to Madinah — and he would collect a full tenth on legumes.
