Abu Sa'id ibn Abi Amr informed us > Abu al-Abbas Muhammad ibn Ya'qub > al-Rabi' ibn Sulayman > al-Shafi'i > Sufyan ibn Uyaynah > Abu Ishaq > Harithah ibn Mudarrib, that Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) imposed upon the people of the Sawad hospitality of one day and one night. Whoever was detained by illness or rain would spend from his own wealth. Al-Shafi'i said: The hadith of Aslam regarding three days of hospitality is more fitting, because the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) made hospitality three days. It is also possible that he set it for some people at three days and for others at one day and night. He did not establish [any further obligations].
