Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, from Abu Bakr ibn Ishaq, from Isma'il ibn Qutaybah, from Yahya ibn Yahya, from Hammad; and Abu Abdullah informed us from Ali ibn Hamshad, from Muhammad ibn Ayyub, from Sulayman ibn Harb, Musaddad, Abu al-Rabi', and Abdullah ibn Abd al-Wahhab al-Hajabi, all from Hammad ibn Zayd, from Thabit, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was the most handsome of people, the most generous of people, and the bravest of people. One night the people of Madinah were alarmed and went toward the sound. The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) met them coming back on a horse belonging to Abu Talhah, bareback with nothing on it, and his sword hung around his neck. He said: Do not be afraid! He had already investigated the matter and preceded them. He said: We found it (the horse) to be like a sea — or he said: It is indeed a sea. The horse had been sluggish before.
