Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Sulami narrated to us, from Ahmad ibn Ja'far al-Qati'i, from Ibrahim ibn Abdullah who is Abu Muslim; and Abu al-Hasan Ali ibn Ahmad ibn Abdan informed us, from Ahmad ibn Ubayd al-Saffar, from Abu Muslim, from Amr ibn Marzuq, from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abdullah ibn Dinar, from his father, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), from the Prophet (peace be upon him) who said: Wretched is the slave of the dinar, the slave of the dirham, and the slave of the fine striped garment. If he is given, he is pleased; and if he is denied, he is displeased. Wretched is he and may he be thrown back; and if he is pricked with a thorn, may he find no one to remove it. Blessed is a servant who holds the reins of his horse in the cause of Allah, with disheveled hair and dusty feet. If he is in the rear guard, he stays in the rear guard; if he is on watch, he stays on watch. If he asks for permission, he is not granted it; and if he intercedes, his intercession is not accepted. Blessed is he, and blessed is he again.
