أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَلِيٍّ الرُّوذْبَارِيُّ وَأَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحَافِظُ قَالَا ثنا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ الْحُسَيْنُ بْنُ الْحَسَنِ بْنِ أَيُّوبَ ثنا أَبُو حَاتِمٍ الرَّازِيُّ ح وَأَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو عَبْدِ اللهِ أَخْبَرَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ عَبْدُوسٍ ثنا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الدَّارِمِيُّ قَالَا ثنا أَبُو تَوْبَةَ ثنا مُعَاوِيَةُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ سَلَّامٍ عَنْ زَيْدٍ هُوَ ابْنُ سَلَّامٍ أَنَّهُ سَمِعَ أَبَا سَلَّامٍ قَالَ حَدَّثَنِي النُّعْمَانُ بْنُ بَشِيرٍ ؓ قَالَ كُنْتُ عِنْدَ مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ فَقَالَ رَجُلٌ لَا أُبَالِي أَنْ لَا أَعْمَلَ عَمَلًا بَعْدَ الْإِسْلَامِ إِلَّا أَنْ أَعْمُرَ الْمَسْجِدَ الْحَرَامَ وَقَالَ الْآخَرُ الْجِهَادُ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ أَفْضَلُ مِمَّا قُلْتُمْ فَزَجَرَهُمْ عُمَرُ بْنُ الْخَطَّابِ ؓ ثُمَّ قَالَ لَا تَرْفَعُوا أَصْوَاتَكُمْ عِنْدَ مِنْبَرِ رَسُولِ اللهِ ﷺ وَهُوَ يَوْمُ الْجُمُعَةِ وَلَكِنِّي إِذَا صَلَّيْتُ الْجُمُعَةَ دَخَلْتُ فَاسْتَفْتَيْتُهُ فِيمَا اخْتَلَفْتُمْ فِيهِ فَأَنْزَلَ اللهُ ﷻ {أَجَعَلْتُمْ سِقَايَةَ الْحَاجِّ وَعِمَارَةَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ كَمَنْ آمَنَ بِاللهِ وَالْيَوْمِ الْآخِرِ وَجَاهَدَ فِي سَبِيلِ اللهِ لَا يَسْتَوُونَ عِنْدَ اللهِ} [التوبة 19] الْآيَةَ

Abu Ali al-Rudhbari and Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, from Abu Abdullah al-Husayn ibn al-Hasan ibn Ayyub, from Abu Hatim al-Razi; and Abu Abdullah informed us, from Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Abdus, from Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Darimi, both from Abu Tawbah, from Mu'awiyah ibn Sallam, from Zayd ibn Sallam, who heard Abu Sallam say: Al-Nu'man ibn Bashir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated to me, saying: I was by the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) when a man said: I would not care if I did no other deed after Islam except to maintain the Sacred Mosque. Another said: Jihad in the cause of Allah is better than what you have said. Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) rebuked them and said: Do not raise your voices near the pulpit of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), for it is Friday. But when I finish the Friday prayer, I will go in and ask him about what you have disagreed upon. Then Allah the Almighty revealed: "Do you consider providing water to pilgrims and maintaining the Sacred Mosque equal to one who believes in Allah and the Last Day and strives in the cause of Allah? They are not equal in the sight of Allah" [al-Tawbah 9:19].
