أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو طَاهِرٍ الْفَقِيهُ أنبأ أَبُو بَكْرٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْحُسَيْنِ الْقَطَّانُ ح وأنبأ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ مَحْبُوبٍ الدَّهَّانُ ثنا أَبُو حَامِدٍ أَحْمَدُ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ يَحْيَى بْنِ بِلَالٍ الْبَزَّازُ قَالَا ثنا أَبُو الْأَزْهَرِ ثنا وَهْبُ بْنُ جَرِيرٍ ثنا أَبِي قَالَ سَمِعْتُ يُونُسَ بْنَ يَزِيدَ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللهِ بْنِ عُتْبَةَ عَنِ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ ؓ قَالَ قَالَ رَسُولُ اللهِ ﷺ خَيْرُ الْأَصْحَابِ أَرْبَعَةٌ وَخَيْرُ السَّرَايَا أَرْبَعُمِائَةٍ وَخَيْرُ الْجُيُوشِ أَرْبَعَةُ آلَافٍ وَلَنْ يُغْلَبَ اثْنَا عَشَرَ أَلْفًا مِنْ قِلَّةٍ تَفَرَّدَ بِهِ جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ مَوْصُولًا وَرَوَاهُ عُثْمَانُ بْنُ عُمَرَ عَنْ يُونُسَ عَنْ عَقِيلٍ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنِ النَّبِيِّ ﷺ مُنْقَطِعًا قَالَ أَبُو دَاوُدَ أَسْنَدَهُ جَرِيرُ بْنُ حَازِمٍ وَهُوَ خَطَأٌ

Abu Tahir al-Faqih informed us from Abu Bakr Muhammad ibn al-Husayn al-Qattan, and Abu Abd al-Rahman Muhammad ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahbub al-Dahhan, from Abu Hamid Ahmad ibn Muhammad ibn Yahya ibn Bilal, both from Abu al-Azhar, from Wahb ibn Jarir, from his father who heard Yunus ibn Yazid, from al-Zuhri, from Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Utbah, from Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) who said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: The best number of companions is four; the best raiding party is four hundred; the best army is four thousand; and twelve thousand will never be defeated due to small numbers. Jarir ibn Hazim reported it connected, and Uthman ibn Umar reported it from Yunus, from Aqil, from al-Zuhri, from the Prophet (peace be upon him), disconnected. Abu Dawud said: Jarir ibn Hazim connected it, but it is an error.
