Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us, from Abu al-Hasan Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Anazi, from Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Darimi, from Musa ibn Isma'il, from Hammad ibn Salamah; and Abu Ali al-Rudhbari informed us, from Muhammad ibn Bakr, from Abu Dawud, from Musa ibn Isma'il, from Hammad, from Thabit, from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him): The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) called his companions to march to Badr. They encountered the water-carriers of Quraysh, among whom was a black slave belonging to Banu al-Hajjaj. The Prophet's companions captured him and kept asking: Where is Abu Sufyan? He replied: By Allah, I know nothing of his whereabouts, but these are Quraysh who have come — among them Abu Jahl, Utbah, Shaybah the sons of Rabi'ah, and Umayyah ibn Khalaf. When he told them this, they beat him. He would say: Leave me, I will tell you. When they released him, he repeated: By Allah, I know nothing of Abu Sufyan, but Quraysh have come with Abu Jahl, Utbah, Shaybah, and Umayyah ibn Khalaf. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was praying and heard all this. When he finished, he said: By Him in Whose hand is my soul, you beat him when he tells you the truth and leave him when he lies. These are Quraysh who have come to protect Abu Sufyan. Anas said: The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: This is the place where so-and-so will fall tomorrow — and placed his hand on the ground — and this is where so-and-so will fall — and placed his hand — and this is where so-and-so will fall. By Him in Whose hand is my soul, not one of them fell beyond the spot where the Messenger of Allah placed his hand. He ordered them dragged by their feet and cast into the well of Badr.
