Abu Abdullah al-Hafiz informed us from Ahmad ibn Muhammad al-Anazi, from Uthman ibn Sa'id al-Darimi, from Ahmad ibn Salih, from Ibn Wahb, from Haywa ibn Shurayh, from Ibn al-Had, from Shurahbil ibn Sa'd, from Jabir ibn Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) who said: We were with the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) at the Battle of Khaybar. A raiding party went out and captured a man who was herding sheep. They brought him to the Messenger of Allah. The Prophet spoke to him as Allah willed, and the man said: I believe in you and what you have brought. But what about the sheep, O Messenger of Allah? They are a trust, belonging to various people. The Prophet said: Throw pebbles at their faces and they will return to their owners. He took a handful of gravel or dust and threw it at their faces, and they ran off until each sheep returned to its owner. Then the man advanced to the front line and was struck by an arrow that killed him, having never prayed a single prostration to Allah. The Messenger of Allah said: Bring him into the tent. He was brought into the tent of the Messenger of Allah. When the Prophet finished and entered upon him, he came out and said: Your companion's Islam was excellent. I entered upon him and found two wives from the houris of Paradise beside him.
