Abu Jahl said: 'Does Muhammad press his face (in prostration) among you?' It was said: 'Yes.' He swore by al-Lat and al-Uzza: 'If I see him doing that, I will step on his neck or rub his face in the dust.' He came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) while he was praying, intending to step on his neck. But what surprised them was that he suddenly recoiled on his heels, shielding himself with his hands. They said to him: 'What is wrong with you?' He said: 'Between him and me there is a trench of fire and terror and wings.' The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said: 'Had he come near me, the angels would have snatched him limb by limb.' Then it was revealed - I do not know whether it was in the hadith of Abu Hurayrah or something that reached him: 'Indeed, mankind transgresses, because he sees himself self-sufficient. Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays? Have you seen if he is upon guidance or enjoins righteousness? Have you seen if he denies and turns away?' - meaning Abu Jahl - 'Does he not know that Allah sees? No! If he does not desist, We will surely seize him by the forelock - a lying, sinful forelock. Then let him call his associates' - meaning his people - 'We will call the angels of Hell. No! Do not obey him, but prostrate and draw near.'
