قَالَ يَعْقُوبُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي عَنِ ابْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ وَحَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ عَنْ أَبِيهِ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرِو بْنِ الْعَاصِ قَالَ قُلْتُ لَهُ مَا أَكْثَرَ مَا رَأَيْتَ قُرَيْشًا أَصَابَتْ مِنْ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ فِيمَا كَانَتْ تُظْهِرُ مِنْ عَدَاوَتِهِ قَالَ حَضَرْتُهُمْ وَقَدْ اجْتَمَعَ أَشْرَافُهُمْ يَوْمًا فِي الْحِجْرِ فَذَكَرُوا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالُوا مَا رَأَيْنَا مِثْلَ مَا صَبَرْنَا عَلَيْهِ مِنْ هَذَا الرَّجُلِ قَطُّ سَفَّهَ أَحْلَامَنَا وَشَتَمَ آبَاءَنَا وَعَابَ دِينَنَا وَفَرَّقَ جَمَاعَتَنَا وَسَبَّ آلِهَتَنَا لَقَدْ صَبَرْنَا مِنْهُ عَلَى أَمْرٍ عَظِيمٍ أَوْ كَمَا قَالُوا قَالَ فَبَيْنَمَا هُمْ كَذَلِكَ إِذْ طَلَعَ عَلَيْهِمْ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَأَقْبَلَ يَمْشِي حَتَّى اسْتَلَمَ الرُّكْنَ ثُمَّ مَرَّ بِهِمْ طَائِفًا بِالْبَيْتِ فَلَمَّا أَنْ مَرَّ بِهِمْ غَمَزُوهُ بِبَعْضِ مَا يَقُولُ قَالَ فَعَرَفْتُ ذَلِكَ فِي وَجْهِهِ ثُمَّ مَضَى فَلَمَّا مَرَّ بِهِمْ الثَّانِيَةَ غَمَزُوهُ بِمِثْلِهَا فَعَرَفْتُ ذَلِكَ فِي وَجْهِهِ ثُمَّ مَضَى ثُمَّ مَرَّ بِهِمْ الثَّالِثَةَ فَغَمَزُوهُ بِمِثْلِهَا فَقَالَ تَسْمَعُونَ يَا مَعْشَرَ قُرَيْشٍ أَمَا وَالَّذِي نَفْسُ مُحَمَّدٍ بِيَدِهِ لَقَدْ جِئْتُكُمْ بِالذَّبْحِ فَأَخَذَتْ الْقَوْمَ كَلِمَتُهُ حَتَّى مَا مِنْهُمْ رَجُلٌ إِلَّا كَأَنَّمَا عَلَى رَأْسِهِ طَائِرٌ وَاقِعٌ حَتَّى إِنَّ أَشَدَّهُمْ فِيهِ وَصَاةً قَبْلَ ذَلِكَ لَيَرْفَؤُهُ بِأَحْسَنِ مَا يَجِدُ مِنْ الْقَوْلِ حَتَّى إِنَّهُ لَيَقُولُ انْصَرِفْ يَا أَبَا الْقَاسِمِ انْصَرِفْ رَاشِدًا فَوَاللَّهِ مَا كُنْتَ جَهُولًا قَالَ فَانْصَرَفَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى إِذَا كَانَ الْغَدُ اجْتَمَعُوا فِي الْحِجْرِ وَأَنَا مَعَهُمْ فَقَالَ بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ ذَكَرْتُمْ مَا بَلَغَ مِنْكُمْ وَمَا بَلَغَكُمْ عَنْهُ حَتَّى إِذَا بَادَأَكُمْ بِمَا تَكْرَهُونَ تَرَكْتُمُوهُ فَبَيْنَمَا هُمْ فِي ذَلِكَ إِذْ طَلَعَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَوَثَبُوا إِلَيْهِ وَثْبَةَ رَجُلٍ وَاحِدٍ فَأَحَاطُوا بِهِ يَقُولُونَ لَهُ أَنْتَ الَّذِي تَقُولُ كَذَا وَكَذَا لِمَا كَانَ يَبْلُغُهُمْ عَنْهُ مِنْ عَيْبِ آلِهَتِهِمْ وَدِينِهِمْ قَالَ فَيَقُولُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَعَمْ أَنَا الَّذِي أَقُولُ ذَلِكَ قَالَ فَلَقَدْ رَأَيْتُ رَجُلًا مِنْهُمْ أَخَذَ بِمَجْمَعِ رِدَائِهِ قَالَ وَقَامَ أَبُو بَكْرٍ الصِّدِّيقُ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى عَنْهُ دُونَهُ يَقُولُ وَهُوَ يَبْكِي { أَتَقْتُلُونَ رَجُلًا أَنْ يَقُولَ رَبِّيَ اللَّهُ } ثُمَّ انْصَرَفُوا عَنْهُ فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ لَأَشَدُّ مَا رَأَيْتُ قُرَيْشًا بَلَغَتْ مِنْهُ قَطُّ.

Ya'qub said: my father told us, from Ibn Ishaq, who said: Yahya ibn Urwah ibn al-Zubayr told me, from his father Urwah, from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, who said: I said to him: What is the worst you ever saw Quraysh inflict upon the Messenger of Allah, in the enmity they used to display toward him? He said: I was present with them when their nobles gathered one day in the Hijr and mentioned the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: We have never endured anything like what we have endured from this man - he has mocked our reasoning, insulted our forefathers, disparaged our religion, divided our unity, and reviled our gods; we have endured a grave matter from him, or words to that effect. He said: While they were thus, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, appeared, walking until he touched the Corner, then passed by them circling the House. As he passed by them they taunted him with some remark; he said, I recognized that in his face, then he went on. When he passed by them the second time they taunted him likewise, and I recognized that in his face; then he went on. Then he passed by them the third time and they taunted him likewise, whereupon he said: Do you hear, O assembly of Quraysh? By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, I have brought you slaughter. His words seized the people such that there was not a man among them but felt as though a bird were perched upon his head, until even the harshest of them toward him before that began to soothe him with the best words he could find, even saying: Go your way, O Abu al-Qasim, go your way rightly guided, for by Allah you were never foolish. So the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, departed. The next day they gathered again in the Hijr, and I was with them, and some of them said to others: You spoke of what befell you from him and what reached you about him, yet when he confronted you directly with what you dislike, you left him be. While they were thus, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, appeared, and they leapt at him as one man and surrounded him, saying to him: Are you the one who says such and such? - referring to what had reached them from him regarding his disparagement of their gods and religion. He said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Yes, I am the one who says that. He said: I saw a man among them seize the collar of his garment, and Abu Bakr al-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, stood in front of him, weeping and saying: Would you kill a man for saying, My Lord is Allah? Then they released him. That was the worst I ever saw Quraysh inflict upon him.
