Ya'qub told us: My father told us, from Ibn Ishaq: Abu Sufyan al-Harashi told me - and he was trustworthy according to what the people of his region said - from Muslim ibn Jubayr, freedman of Thaqif, and Muslim was a man whose narrations were accepted, and he had lived long and heard - from Amr ibn Hurayth al-Zubaydi, from Abdullah ibn Amr ibn al-As, who said: I said, "O Abu Muhammad, we are in a land where we do not find the dinar and the dirham, and our wealth consists only of livestock, so we trade among ourselves, buying a cow for a sheep on credit to a fixed term, and a camel for cows, and a horse for camels, all to a fixed term - is there any harm in that for us?" He said, "You have hit upon someone knowledgeable. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, ordered me to send out an army mounted on camels that I had." He said: I put the people on them until the camels ran out, and there remained a group of people [without mounts]. I said to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, "O Messenger of Allah, the camels have run out, and there remains a group of people who have no mounts." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said to me, "Buy for us camels with young she-camels from the camels of the zakat, to be paid back when it is due, until we complete this expedition." He said: So I would buy a camel for two or three young she-camels from the zakat camels, to be paid back when due, until I completed that expedition. He said: Then when the zakat became due, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, paid it.
