حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ أَخْبَرَنَا أَيُّوبُ عَنْ نَافِعٍ عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ إِذَا قَعَدَ يَتَشَهَّدُ وَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُسْرَى عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ الْيُسْرَى وَوَضَعَ يَدَهُ الْيُمْنَى عَلَى رُكْبَتِهِ الْيُمْنَى وَعَقَدَ ثَلَاثًا وَخَمْسِينَ وَدَعَا.

Affan told us: Hammad ibn Salamah told us: Ayyub informed us, from Nafi', from Abdullah ibn Umar, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when he sat for the tashahhud, would place his left hand on his left knee and his right hand on his right knee, forming the number fifty-three (with his fingers), and supplicate.
