Affan told us: Hammad told us: Ata' ibn al-Sa'ib told us, from al-Sha'bi, from Ibn Mas'ud, that the women on the day of Uhud were behind the Muslims, finishing off the wounded polytheists. "Had I sworn an oath that day, I would have hoped to be true to it: that none of us desired the world" — until Allah, Mighty and Sublime, revealed: "Among you are some who desire this world and some who desire the Hereafter. Then He turned you back from them that He might test you." So when the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) disobeyed and went against what they had been commanded, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was left isolated among nine — seven of the Ansar and two men of Quraysh, he being the tenth of them. When they closed in on him, he said, "May Allah have mercy on a man who repels them from us." A man of the Ansar stood and fought for a time until he was killed. When they closed in on him again, he said, "May Allah have mercy on a man who repels them from us," and he kept saying this until the seven were killed. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his two companions, "We have not been fair to our companions." Then Abu Sufyan came and said, "Glory to Hubal!" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Say: Allah is more exalted and more majestic." So they said, "Allah is more exalted and more majestic." Abu Sufyan said, "We have al-Uzza, and you have no Uzza." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Say: Allah is our Protector, and the disbelievers have no protector." Then Abu Sufyan said, "A day for a day, like Badr. A day for us and a day against us; a day we grieve and a day we rejoice. Hanzala for Hanzala, so-and-so for so-and-so, so-and-so for so-and-so." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Not equal! As for our dead, they are alive, provided for, and your dead are in the Fire, being punished." Abu Sufyan said, "There was mutilation among the people, and if it happened, it was not by the counsel of our chiefs; I neither ordered it nor forbade it, neither loved it nor disliked it, and it neither grieved me nor pleased me." He said: Then they looked, and Hamza's belly had been cut open, and Hind had taken his liver and chewed it but could not swallow it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Did she eat any of it?" They said, "No." He said, "Allah would never let any part of Hamza enter the Fire." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laid Hamza down and prayed over him, and a man of the Ansar was brought and placed beside him, and he prayed over him, and the Ansari was lifted away and Hamza left in place; then another was brought and placed beside Hamza, and he prayed over him, then he was lifted away and Hamza left, until he had prayed over him seventy times that day.
