Hasan ibn Musa told us: Zuhayr told us, from Abu Ishaq, from Alqamah ibn Qays — though he did not hear it directly from him, and a man asked him about the hadith of Alqamah, and this is that hadith — that Abdullah ibn Mas'ud came to Abu Musa al-Ash'ari at his home, and the prayer time came, and Abu Musa said, "Go forward, O Abu Abdul Rahman, for you are older in age and more knowledgeable." He said, "No, rather you go forward, for we have only come to you in your house and your place of prayer, so you have more right." So Abu Musa went forward and took off his sandals. When he had finished the prayer, he said, "What made you take them off? Are you in the sacred valley? I have certainly seen the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) pray in leather socks and sandals."
