Ali ibn Thabit narrated to us, Hisham ibn Sa'd narrated to me, from Hatim ibn Abi Nasr, from Ubadah ibn Nusayy. He said: There was a man in Sham called Ma'dan whom Abu al-Darda' used to teach the Qur'an. Abu al-Darda' missed him, then met him one day while he was in Dabiq. Abu al-Darda' said to him: "O Ma'dan, what happened to the Qur'an that was with you? How are you with the Qur'an today?" He said: "Allah knows well about it." He said: "O Ma'dan, do you live today in a city or in a village?" He said: "No, rather in a village near the city." He said: "Wait, woe to you, O Ma'dan! For I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say: 'There are no five households where the adhan is not called among them and the prayers are not established except that Shaytan has overcome them. The wolf takes the stray sheep. So you must stay in the cities, woe to you, O Ma'dan!'"
