He said: I read to Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi: Malik, from Abdullah ibn Yazid, the freed slave of al-Aswad ibn Sufyan, from Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Fatimah bint Qays, that Abu Amr ibn Hafs divorced her irrevocably while he was absent, and he sent his agent to her with barley, and she was displeased with it, so he said, "By Allah, you have nothing due from us." So she came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentioned that to him, and he said, "You have no maintenance due from him." So he ordered her to observe her waiting period in the house of Umm Sharik, then he said, "That is a woman whom my companions visit frequently; observe your waiting period at Ibn Umm Maktum's, for he is a blind man - you may put your clothes off in his presence. When you become free, inform me." When I became free, I mentioned to him that Mu'awiyah ibn Abi Sufyan and Abu al-Jahm had proposed to me, so the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "As for Abu al-Jahm, he never puts down his stick; and as for Mu'awiyah, he is a pauper with no wealth. Marry Usamah ibn Zayd." Ishaq ibn Isa told us, he said Malik informed us, from Abdullah ibn Yazid, the freed slave of al-Aswad ibn Sufyan, from Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman, from Fatimah bint Qays, that Abu Amr ibn Hafs divorced her irrevocably while he was absent - and he mentioned its like, and said, "Marry Usamah ibn Zayd," and I disliked him, so he said, "Marry Usamah ibn Zayd." So I married him, and Allah placed in him a great good for me.
