حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَتْنِي زَيْنَبُ بِنْتُ كَعْبٍ عَنْ فُرَيْعَةَ بِنْتِ مَالِكٍ قَالَتْ خَرَجَ زَوْجِي فِي طَلَبِ أَعْلَاجٍ لَهُ فَأَدْرَكَهُمْ بِطَرَفِ الْقَدُومِ فَقَتَلُوهُ فَأَتَانِي نَعْيُهُ وَأَنَا فِي دَارٍ شَاسِعَةٍ مِنْ دُورِ أَهْلِي فَأَتَيْتُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَذَكَرْتُ ذَلِكَ لَهُ فَقُلْتُ إِنَّ نَعْيَ زَوْجِي أَتَانِي فِي دَارٍ شَاسِعَةٍ مِنْ دُورِ أَهْلِي وَلَمْ يَدَعْ لِي نَفَقَةً وَلَا مَالًا لِوَرَثَتِهِ وَلَيْسَ الْمَسْكَنُ لَهُ فَلَوْ تَحَوَّلْتُ إِلَى أَهْلِي وَأَخْوَالِي لَكَانَ أَرْفَقَ بِي فِي بَعْضِ شَأْنِي قَالَ تَحَوَّلِي فَلَمَّا خَرَجْتُ إِلَى الْمَسْجِدِ أَوْ إِلَى الْحُجْرَةِ دَعَانِي أَوْ أَمَرَ بِي فَدُعِيتُ فَقَالَ امْكُثِي فِي بَيْتِكِ الَّذِي أَتَاكِ فِيهِ نَعْيُ زَوْجِكِ حَتَّى يَبْلُغَ الْكِتَابُ أَجَلَهُ قَالَتْ فَاعْتَدَدْتُ فِيهِ أَرْبَعَةَ أَشْهُرٍ وَعَشْرًا قَالَتْ فَأَرْسَلَ إِلَيَّ عُثْمَانُ فَأَخْبَرْتُهُ فَأَخَذَ بِهِ حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ عَنْ سَعْدِ بْنِ إِسْحَاقَ قَالَ حَدَّثَتْنِي زَيْنَبُ بِنْتُ كَعْبٍ عَنْ فُرَيْعَةَ بِنْتِ مَالِكٍ عَنْ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ نَحْوَهُ.

Yahya ibn Sa'id narrated to us, from Sa'd ibn Ishaq, he said: Zaynab bint Ka'b narrated to me, from al-Furay'ah bint Malik, she said: My husband went out in pursuit of some of his slaves who had fled, and he caught up with them at the outskirts of al-Qadum, and they killed him. So news of his death came to me while I was in a house far from the houses of my family. I went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentioned that to him. I said: The news of my husband's death came to me while I was in a house far from the houses of my family, and he left me neither maintenance nor wealth for his heirs, and the dwelling was not his own; so if I moved to my family and my maternal relatives, it would be more suitable for me in some of my affairs. He said: Move then. But when I went out to the mosque, or to the chamber, he called me, or ordered that I be called, and I was called, and he said: Stay in your house, the one in which the news of your husband's death came to you, until the decreed term is reached. She said: So I observed the waiting period in it for four months and ten (days). She said: Then 'Uthman sent to me and I informed him, and he acted upon it. Bishr ibn al-Mufaddal narrated to us, from Sa'd ibn Ishaq, he said: Zaynab bint Ka'b narrated to me, from al-Furay'ah bint Malik, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, similarly.
