Hujayn b. al-Muthanna told us: Abd al-Aziz — meaning Ibn Abi Salamah al-Majishun — told us, from Muhammad — meaning Ibn al-Munkadir — who said: Asma' used to relate from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), she said: He said, 'When a person enters his grave, if he was a believer, his deeds — the prayer and the fasting — surround him.' He said: 'So the angel comes to him from the direction of the prayer, and it repels him; and from the direction of the fasting, and it repels him.' He said: 'Then he calls to him, "Sit up." He said: So he sits up, and he says to him, "What do you say about this man?"' — meaning the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) — 'he said: whoever says "Muhammad," he says: "I bear witness that he is the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him."' He said: 'He says, "And what do you know? Did you witness him? You bear witness that he is the Messenger of God?"' He said: 'He says: "On that you lived, and on that you died, and on that you will be resurrected."' He said: 'But if he was wicked or an unbeliever' — he said: 'the angel comes, and there is nothing between him and him to repel him.' He said: 'So he makes him sit up.' He said: 'He says, "Sit up — what do you say about this man?"' He said: 'Which man?' He said: 'Muhammad.' He said: 'He says, "By God, I do not know; I heard the people saying something, so I said it."' He said: 'Then the angel says to him, "On that you lived, and on that you died, and on that you will be resurrected."' He said: 'And a beast is set upon him in his grave, with it a whip whose lash is a live coal like the wooden peg of a camel-saddle, striking him as long as God wills — deaf, not hearing his voice, so that it might show him mercy.'
