Muhammad b. Ja'far told us: Shu'bah told us, from Ja'dah, from Umm Hani' — she being his grandmother — that the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) came in to her on the Day of the Conquest, and a drink was brought, and he drank, then handed it to me. I said, 'I am fasting.' The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said, 'The one who fasts voluntarily is in charge of himself; if you wish, fast, and if you wish, break your fast.'
