'Abd al-Razzaq told us: Ja'far bin Sulayman told us, from Thabit, who said: Shumaysah, or Sumayyah, told me - 'Abd al-Razzaq said: it is in my book as Sumayyah - from Safiyyah bint Huyay, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, performed Hajj with his wives. On part of the journey, a man got down and drove them, and he went too fast. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Gently with your driving of the glass vessels" - meaning the women. While they were traveling, the camel of Safiyyah bint Huyay stumbled - and she had one of the best mounts among them - so she wept. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, came when he was told of that, and began to wipe away her tears with his hand, while she wept all the more, and he kept telling her not to. When she persisted, he rebuked her sharply, and ordered the people to dismount, so they dismounted, though he had not intended to stop. She said: They dismounted, and it was my turn. When they had dismounted, the tent of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was pitched, and he went into it. She said: I did not know on what account I was being shunned by the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and I feared that he had something against me. So I went to 'A'ishah and said to her: "You know that I would never sell my turn with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, for anything, ever, but I have given my turn to you, so that you may make the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, pleased with me." She said: "Yes." So 'A'ishah took a headscarf of hers which she had soaked with saffron, and sprinkled it with water to freshen its scent, then put on her clothes, then went to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and lifted the edge of the tent. He said to her: "What is it, 'A'ishah? This is not your day." She said: "That is the bounty of Allah which He gives to whom He wills." He said: "Go to her family." When it was time to set off in the evening, he said to Zaynab bint Jahsh: "O Zaynab, lend your sister Safiyyah a camel" - for she had one of the most abundant mounts among them. She said: "Shall I lend your Jewess a camel?" The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, became angry when he heard that from her, and he estranged her, not speaking to her, until he arrived in Mecca and the days of Mina during his journey, until he returned to Medina, and through Muharram and Safar, he did not go to her nor allot her a turn, and she despaired of him. When the month of Rabi' al-Awwal came, he went in to her, and she saw his shadow and said: "This is the shadow of a man, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, does not come in to me - who is this?" Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, entered, and when she saw him she said: "O Messenger of Allah, I do not know what to do now that you have come in to me." She said: And she had a slave-girl whom she used to hide from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. So she said: "So-and-so is yours." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, then walked to Zaynab's bed - which had been raised up - and set it down with his own hand. Then he went in to his wife and was pleased with her. 'Affan told us: Hammad - meaning Ibn Salamah - told us: Thabit told us, from Sumayyah, from 'A'ishah, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was on a journey, and a camel of Safiyyah's became lame, and he mentioned something similar.
