Narrated to us by Muhammad ibn Ja'far and Hajjaj, who said: Shu'bah narrated to us, who said: I heard Abd Rabbih ibn Sa'id, the brother of Yahya ibn Sa'id, say: I heard Abu Salamah ibn Abd al-Rahman say: "Abu Hurayrah and Ibn Abbas disagreed regarding a woman whose husband died while she was pregnant, as to when she should marry after giving birth. Abu Hurayrah said, 'She may marry immediately after childbirth.' Ibn Abbas said, 'The longer of the two periods.'" He said: "So they sent to Umm Salamah, and she said: 'The husband of Subay'ah bint al-Harith died, and she gave birth fifteen nights after his death, and two men proposed to her.'" He said: "She inclined toward one of them, but when they feared she would decide for herself in favor of one of them, they said, 'You have not yet become lawful to remarry.' So she went to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said, 'You have indeed become lawful, so marry whomever you wish.'"
