Narrated to us by Muhammad ibn Abdullah Abu Ahmad al-Zubayri, who said: 'Ubaydullah ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn Mawhab narrated to us, who said: My uncle - meaning 'Ubaydullah ibn Abdullah ibn Mawhab - narrated to me, who said: Abu Bakr ibn Abd al-Rahman ibn al-Harith ibn Hisham narrated to me, who said: My father resolved to perform 'Umrah, and when the time came for him to set out, he said: "O my son, what if we went in to see the governor and bid him farewell?" I said: "As you wish." He said: So we went in to see Marwan, and with him was a group of people including Abdullah ibn al-Zubayr. They mentioned the two rak'ahs that Ibn al-Zubayr used to pray after 'Asr. Marwan said to him: "From whom did you take them, O Ibn al-Zubayr?" He said: "Abu Hurayrah informed me of them, from A'ishah." So Marwan sent to A'ishah, [asking]: "What are the two rak'ahs that Ibn al-Zubayr mentions, that Abu Hurayrah informed him you said the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray after 'Asr?" She sent back: "Umm Salamah informed me of them." So he sent to Umm Salamah: "What are the two rak'ahs that A'ishah claims you told her the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to pray after 'Asr?" She said: "May Allah forgive A'ishah; she has put my account in other than its place. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed Zuhr, and wealth had been brought to him, so he sat distributing it until the mu'adhdhin came to him for 'Asr. He prayed 'Asr, then came to me - it being my day - and prayed two light rak'ahs. I said: 'What are these two rak'ahs, O Messenger of Allah? Were you commanded to do them?' He said: 'No, but they are two rak'ahs I used to pray after Zuhr, and the distribution of this wealth occupied me until the mu'adhdhin came to me for 'Asr, so I disliked to leave them.'" Ibn al-Zubayr said: "Allahu Akbar! Did he not pray them at least once? By Allah, I will never leave them." And Umm Salamah said: "I never saw him pray them before that nor after."
