حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْمَلِكِ بْنُ عَمْرٍو حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي ذِئْبٍ عَنْ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عُرْوَةَ عَنْ عَائِشَةَ قَالَتْ كَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ يُصَلِّي مَا بَيْنَ أَنْ يَفْرُغَ مِنْ صَلَاةِ الْعِشَاءِ وَهِيَ الَّتِي تُسَمُّونَ أَوْ تَدْعُونَ الْعَتَمَةَ إِلَى الْفَجْرِ إِحْدَى عَشْرَةَ سَجْدَةً يُسَلِّمُ بَيْنَ كُلِّ سَجْدَتَيْنِ وَيُوتِرُ بِوَاحِدَةٍ وَيَسْجُدُ فِي سُبْحَتِهِ بِقَدْرِ مَا يَقْرَأُ أَحَدُكُمْ خَمْسِينَ آيَةً قَبْلَ أَنْ يَرْفَعَ رَأْسَهُ فَإِذَا سَكَتَ الْمُؤَذِّنُ بِالْأُولَى مِنْ صَلَاةِ الصُّبْحِ رَكَعَ رَكْعَتَيْنِ خَفِيفَتَيْنِ ثُمَّ اضْطَجَعَ عَلَى شِقِّهِ الْأَيْمَنِ فَيَأْتِيهِ الْمُؤَذِّنُ فَيَخْرُجُ مَعَهُ.

Aisha reported: The Messenger of Allah used to pray between finishing the Isha prayer — which you call or refer to as al-Atamah — and Fajr, eleven units of prayer (rak'ahs), giving salaam between every two rak'ahs, and making witr with one. He would prostrate in his voluntary prayer for as long as it takes one of you to recite fifty verses before raising his head. When the muezzin fell silent after the first call for the Fajr prayer, he would pray two light rak'ahs, then lie on his right side until the muezzin came to him, and he would go out with him.
