The Jews came to the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) and said: 'O Abu al-Qasim, we will ask you about five things. If you inform us about them, we will know that you are a prophet and follow you.' He took from them a covenant as Israel had taken from his sons when they said: 'Allah is a witness over what we say.' He said: 'Ask.' They said: 'Tell us about the sign of a prophet.' He said: 'His eyes sleep but his heart does not sleep.' They said: 'Tell us how a woman bears a female and how she bears a male.' He said: 'The two fluids meet; if the man's fluid prevails over the woman's, it produces a male, and if the woman's fluid prevails, it produces a female.' They said: 'Tell us what Israel prohibited upon himself.' He said: 'He used to suffer from sciatica, and he found nothing that suited him except the milk of such-and-such' — Abdullah ibn Ahmad said: My father said: Some said it means camels — 'so he prohibited their meat.' They said: 'You have spoken the truth.' They said: 'Tell us what this thunder is.' He said: 'An angel from among the angels of Allah, entrusted with the clouds. In his hand — or in his hand — is a fiery instrument (mikhraaq) with which he drives the clouds, directing them wherever Allah commands.' They said: 'Then what is this sound that is heard?' He said: 'His voice.' They said: 'You have spoken the truth. Only one question remains, and it is the one for which we will give you our allegiance if you answer it — for there is no prophet except that he has an angel who brings him news. Tell us who is your companion (angel).' He said: 'Jibril (Gabriel), peace be upon him.' They said: 'Jibril! That is the one who descends with war, fighting, and punishment — he is our enemy! Had you said Mika'il (Michael), who descends with mercy, vegetation, and rain, it would have been (different).' Then Allah the Almighty revealed: 'Whoever is an enemy to Jibril' — to the end of the verse (2:97).
