Ibn Abi Adi told us, from Muhammad b. Ishaq, who said: Nafi' told me — his wife was a slave-mother of Abdullah b. Umar — she told him that Abdullah b. Umar bought a slave-girl on the road to Makkah, freed her, and ordered her to perform Hajj with him. He sought sandals for her but could not find them, so he cut a pair of leather socks for her below the ankles. Ibn Ishaq said: I mentioned that to Ibn Shihab, and he said: Salim told me that Abdullah used to do that; then Safiyyah bint Abi Ubayd told him that Aishah told her that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to grant women a concession regarding wearing leather socks in pilgrim sanctity — so he gave up that cutting practice.
