Umar bin Ali al-Muqaddami narrated to us, who said: I heard Hajjaj mention, from Makhul, from Abdur-Rahman bin Muhayriz, who said: I said to Fadalah bin Ubayd: Do you consider hanging the thief's severed hand around his neck to be part of the Sunnah? He said: Yes; I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, brought a thief, and he ordered him punished, and his hand was cut off, then he ordered it hung around his neck. Hajjaj said: And Fadalah was among those who gave the pledge of allegiance under the tree. Abu Abdur-Rahman Abdullah bin Ahmad said: I said to Yahya bin Ma'in: Did you hear anything from Umar bin Ali al-Muqaddami? He said: What did he have? I said: The hadith of Fadalah bin Ubayd about hanging the hand. He said: No, Affan narrated it to us from him.
