حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ أَنْبَأَنَا ابْنُ جُرَيْجٍ أَخْبَرَنِي ابْنُ شِهَابٍ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيِّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَدِيِّ بْنِ الْخِيَارِ أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَخْبَرَنِي أَنَّ الْمِقْدَادَ أَخْبَرَهُ أَنَّهُ قَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ لَقِيتُ رَجُلًا مِنْ الْكُفَّارِ فَقَاتَلَنِي فَاخْتَلَفْنَا ضَرْبَتَيْنِ فَضَرَبَ إِحْدَى يَدَيَّ بِالسَّيْفِ فَقَطَعَهَا ثُمَّ لَاذَ مِنِّي بِشَجَرَةٍ فَقَالَ أَسْلَمْتُ لِلَّهِ أُقَاتِلُهُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ بَعْدَ أَنْ قَالَهَا فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لَا تَقْتُلْهُ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنَّهُ قَطَعَ إِحْدَى يَدَيَّ ثُمَّ قَالَ ذَلِكَ بَعْدَ مَا قَطَعَهَا أُقَاتِلُهُ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ لَا تَقْتُلْهُ فَإِنْ قَتَلْتَهُ فَإِنَّهُ بِمَنْزِلَتِكَ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَقْتُلَهُ وَأَنْتَ بِمَنْزِلَتِهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَقُولَ كَلِمَتَهُ الَّتِي قَالَ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ حَدَّثَنَا مَعْمَرٌ عَنِ الزُّهْرِيِّ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَزِيدَ اللَّيْثِيِّ عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَدِيِّ بْنِ الْخِيَارِ أَنَّ الْمِقْدَادَ بْنَ الْأَسْوَدِ حَدَّثَهُ قَالَ قُلْتُ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ اخْتَلَفْتُ أَنَا وَرَجُلٌ فَذَكَرَ الْحَدِيثَ إِلَّا أَنَّهُ قَالَ أَقْتُلُهُ أَمْ أَدَعُهُ.

Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ibn Jurayj informed us: Ibn Shihab informed me from Ata' ibn Yazid al-Laythi from Ubaydullah ibn Adiyy ibn al-Khiyar, that he said: al-Miqdad informed him that he said: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if I meet a man among the disbelievers and he fights me, and we exchange two blows, and he strikes one of my hands with the sword and cuts it off, then takes refuge from me by a tree and says, 'I have submitted to Allah' -- should I fight him, O Messenger of Allah, after he has said it?" The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do not kill him." I said: "O Messenger of Allah, he cut off one of my hands, then said that after he had cut it off -- shall I fight him?" The Messenger of Allah said: "Do not kill him, for if you kill him, he is in your position before you killed him, and you are in his position before he said the word he said." Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us: Ma'mar narrated to us from al-Zuhri from Ata' ibn Yazid al-Laythi from Ubaydullah ibn Adiyy ibn al-Khiyar, that al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad told him, he said: I said: "O Messenger of Allah, what do you think if I and a man clash..." and he mentioned the hadith, except that he said: "should I kill him or leave him?"
