Affan narrated to us: Hammad ibn Salamah narrated to us from Thabit from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla from al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, he said: "I came to Medina, I and a companion of mine, and we presented ourselves to the people, but no one gave us hospitality. So we went to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and mentioned this to him, and he took us to his house, where he had four female goats." He said: "'Milk them, O Miqdad, and divide the milk into four shares, and give each person his share.' So I used to do that. One night I set aside the Prophet's share, peace and blessings be upon him, but he was delayed, and I lay down on my bed. My soul said to me: 'The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, has gone to a household of the Ansar; why not get up and drink this portion?' It kept urging me until I got up and drank his share. When it settled in my stomach and I felt at ease, I was seized by what had passed and what was newly troubling me, and I said: 'The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, will come hungry and thirsty and find nothing in the vessel.' So I covered my face with a garment, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, came and gave a greeting of peace that a waking person could hear but that would not wake a sleeping one. He uncovered me but saw nothing amiss, then raised his head to the sky and said: 'O Allah, give drink to whoever gave me drink, and feed whoever fed me.' So I seized the chance of his supplication, got up, took the knife, and approached the goats, feeling each one to see which was fattest so I could slaughter it. My hand fell upon the udder of one of them, and I found it full; I looked at another, and it was full; I looked at all of them, and they were all full. So I milked into the vessel and brought it to him and said: 'Drink.' He said: 'Tell me the story, O Miqdad.' I said: 'Drink, then the story.' He said: 'You are hiding something of your doings, O Miqdad.' So he drank, then said: 'Drink.' I said: 'Drink, O Prophet of Allah.' So he drank until he was fully satisfied; then I took it and drank, then I told him the story. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'Go on.' I said: 'It was such and such.' The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'This is a blessing that descended from the sky. Why did you not tell me so that I could give your two companions to drink?' I said: 'When you and I have drunk of the blessing, I do not care who else misses out.'"
