حَدَّثَنَا يَعْمَرُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي ابْنَ الْمُبَارَكِ أَنْبَأَنَا صَفْوَانُ بْنُ عَمْرٍو حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ جُبَيْرِ بْنِ نُفَيْرٍ عَنْ أَبِيهِ قَالَ جَلَسْنَا إِلَى الْمِقْدَادِ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ يَوْمًا فَمَرَّ بِهِ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ طُوبَى لِهَاتَيْنِ الْعَيْنَيْنِ اللَّتَيْنِ رَأَتَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَاللَّهِ لَوَدِدْنَا أَنَّا رَأَيْنَا مَا رَأَيْتَ وَشَهِدْنَا مَا شَهِدْتَ فَاسْتُغْضِبَ فَجَعَلْتُ أَعْجَبُ مَا قَالَ إِلَّا خَيْرًا ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ إِلَيْهِ فَقَالَ مَا يَحْمِلُ الرَّجُلُ عَلَى أَنْ يَتَمَنَّى مَحْضَرًا غَيَّبَهُ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ لَا يَدْرِي لَوْ شَهِدَهُ كَيْفَ كَانَ يَكُونُ فِيهِ وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ حَضَرَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَقْوَامٌ أَكَبَّهُمْ اللَّهُ عَلَى مَنَاخِرِهِمْ فِي جَهَنَّمَ لَمْ يُجِيبُوهُ وَلَمْ يُصَدِّقُوهُ أَوَلَا تَحْمَدُونَ اللَّهَ إِذْ أَخْرَجَكُمْ لَا تَعْرِفُونَ إِلَّا رَبَّكُمْ مُصَدِّقِينَ لِمَا جَاءَ بِهِ نَبِيُّكُمْ قَدْ كُفِيتُمْ الْبَلَاءَ بِغَيْرِكُمْ وَاللَّهِ لَقَدْ بَعَثَ اللَّهُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ عَلَى أَشَدِّ حَالٍ بُعِثَ عَلَيْهَا نَبِيٌّ مِنْ الْأَنْبِيَاءِ فِي فَتْرَةٍ وَجَاهِلِيَّةٍ مَا يَرَوْنَ أَنَّ دِينًا أَفْضَلُ مِنْ عِبَادَةِ الْأَوْثَانِ فَجَاءَ بِفُرْقَانٍ فَرَقَ بِهِ بَيْنَ الْحَقِّ وَالْبَاطِلِ وَفَرَّقَ بَيْنَ الْوَالِدِ وَوَلَدِهِ حَتَّى إِنْ كَانَ الرَّجُلُ لَيَرَى وَالِدَهُ وَوَلَدَهُ أَوْ أَخَاهُ كَافِرًا وَقَدْ فَتَحَ اللَّهُ قُفْلَ قَلْبِهِ لِلْإِيمَانِ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّهُ إِنْ هَلَكَ دَخَلَ النَّارَ فَلَا تَقَرُّ عَيْنُهُ وَهُوَ يَعْلَمُ أَنَّ حَبِيبَهُ فِي النَّارِ وَأَنَّهَا لَلَّتِي قَالَ عَزَّ وَجَلَّ { الَّذِينَ يَقُولُونَ رَبَّنَا هَبْ لَنَا مِنْ أَزْوَاجِنَا وَذُرِّيَّاتِنَا قُرَّةَ أَعْيُنٍ }.

Ya'mar ibn Bishr narrated to us, 'Abdullah -- meaning Ibn al-Mubarak -- narrated to us, Safwan ibn 'Amr informed us, 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Jubayr ibn Nufayr narrated to me from his father who said: We sat one day with al-Miqdad ibn al-Aswad, and a man passed by him and said, "Blessed are these two eyes that saw the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him! By God, we wish we had seen what you saw and witnessed what you witnessed." But he grew angry, and I was amazed, for the man had said nothing but good. Then he turned to him and said, "What makes a man wish for a scene which God kept him absent from, not knowing -- had he witnessed it -- how he would have fared in it? By God, there were people present with the Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, whom God will cast down upon their faces into Hell, for they did not respond to him and did not believe him. Do you not thank God that He brought you forth knowing nothing but your Lord, believing in what your Prophet brought, sparing you the trial that others faced? By God, God sent the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the harshest condition upon which any prophet among the prophets was ever sent -- in a period between prophets and in ignorance (Jahiliyya), when they saw no religion better than the worship of idols. So he brought a criterion by which he distinguished between truth and falsehood, and separated between a father and his child, until a man might see his father, his child, or his brother as a disbeliever, while God had opened the lock of his own heart to faith, knowing that if that relative died, he would enter the Fire -- so his eye would not be comforted, knowing that his beloved was in the Fire. And that is what He, Mighty and Majestic, said: {Those who say, 'Our Lord, grant us from our spouses and offspring comfort of the eyes.'}"
