قَالَ فَصَلَّيْتُ خَلْفَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ذَاتَ يَوْمٍ فَعَطَسَ رَجُلٌ مِنْ الْقَوْمِ فَقُلْتُ يَرْحَمُكَ اللَّهُ فَرَمَانِي الْقَوْمُ بِأَبْصَارِهِمْ فَقُلْتُ وَا ثُكْلَ أُمِّيَاهْ مَا شَأْنُكُمْ تَنْظُرُونَ إِلَيَّ قَالَ فَضَرَبُوا بِأَيْدِيهِمْ عَلَى أَفْخَاذِهِمْ فَلَمَّا رَأَيْتُهُمْ يُصْمِتُونِي سَكَتُّ حَتَّى صَلَّى رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَدَعَانِي قَالَ فَبِأَبِي وَأُمِّي مَا رَأَيْتُ مُعَلِّمًا قَبْلَهُ وَلَا بَعْدَهُ أَحْسَنَ تَعْلِيمًا مِنْهُ فَمَا ضَرَبَنِي وَلَا كَهَرَنِي وَلَا سَبَّنِي وَقَالَ إِنَّ هَذِهِ الصَّلَاةَ لَا يَصْلُحُ فِيهَا شَيْءٌ مِنْ كَلَامِ النَّاسِ هَذَا إِنَّمَا هِيَ التَّسْبِيحُ وَالتَّكْبِيرُ وَقِرَاءَةُ الْقُرْآنِ أَوْ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَذِهِ ثَلَاثَةُ أَحَادِيثَ حَدَّثَنِيهَا حَدَّثَنَا عَفَّانُ حَدَّثَنَا أَبَانُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ الْعَطَّارُ حَدَّثَنِي يَحْيَى بْنُ أَبِي كَثِيرٍ حَدَّثَنَا هِلَالُ بْنُ أَبِي مَيْمُونَةَ عَنْ عَطَاءِ بْنِ يَسَارٍ عَنْ مُعَاوِيةَ بْنِ الْحَكَمِ السُّلَمِيِّ حَدَّثَنِي بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ بِنَحْوِهِ فَزَادَ فِيهِ وَقَالَ إِنَّمَا هِيَ التَّسْبِيحُ وَالتَّكْبِيرُ وَالتَّحْمِيدُ وَقِرَاءَةُ الْقُرْآنِ أَوْ كَمَا قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ.

He said: I prayed behind the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, one day, and a man among the people sneezed, so I said: May Allah have mercy on you. The people stared at me with their eyes, so I said: Woe to my mother, what is the matter with you, staring at me? He said: They struck their hands upon their thighs. When I saw that they were trying to silence me, I fell silent, until the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, finished the prayer, and then he called me. He said: By my father and mother, I have never seen a teacher, before him or after him, better in teaching than him. He neither struck me, nor rebuked me harshly, nor cursed me, but said: In this prayer, nothing of the speech of people is proper; it is only glorification, magnification, and recitation of the Qur'an, or as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said. These are three hadiths that he narrated to me. Affan narrated to us: Aban ibn Yazid al-Attar narrated to us: Yahya ibn Abi Kathir narrated to me: Hilal ibn Abi Maymuna narrated to us, from Ata' ibn Yasar, from Mu'awiya ibn al-Hakam al-Sulami, who narrated to me this hadith similarly, but added in it, saying: It is only glorification, magnification, praise, and recitation of the Qur'an, or as the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said.
