Affan narrated to us: Hammam narrated to us: I heard Yahya ibn Abi Kathir, from Hilal ibn Abi Maymuna, that Ata' ibn Yasar told him that Mu'awiya ibn al-Hakam told him three hadiths that he had memorized from the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: I said, O Messenger of Allah, we are a people recently emerged from Jahiliyyah, and Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has brought Islam, and among us are men who draw lines [in the sand for divination]. He said: There was a prophet among the prophets who used to draw lines, so whoever matches his line, that is permissible. He said: I said, among us are men who take omens. He said: That is something they find in their breasts, so let it not turn you away. He said: I said, among us are men who go to fortune-tellers. He said: Do not go to them. He said: This is one hadith.
