Yazid b. Harun told us, Abu Malik told us, from Rib'i b. Hirash, from Hudhayfah: that he came from 'Umar's presence, and said: "When we sat with him yesterday, he asked the Companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): 'Which of you heard the saying of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) about the tribulations?' They said: 'We heard it.' He said: 'Perhaps you mean the tribulation of a man in his family and his wealth?' They said: 'Yes.' He said: 'I am not asking about that - that is expiated by prayer, fasting, and charity - but which of you heard the saying of the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) about the tribulations that surge like the surging of the sea?'" He said: The people fell silent, and I thought he meant me. I said: "I did." He said to me: "You - may your father belong to God!" He said: I said: "The tribulations are presented to hearts as a woven mat, straw by straw; whatever heart rejects them, a white mark is imprinted in it, and whatever heart absorbs them, a black mark is imprinted in it - until the heart becomes one of two kinds: one white like a smooth stone, which no tribulation will harm as long as the heavens and earth endure, and the other black, ash-colored, like an overturned vessel" - and he turned his palm over - "knowing no good and rejecting no evil, except what it has absorbed of its own desire."
