حَدَّثَنَا يَزِيدُ أَخْبَرَنَا الْمَسْعُودِيُّ عَنْ زَيْدٍ الْعَمِّيِّ عَنْ أَبِي نَضْرَةَ عَنْ أَبِي سَعِيدٍ قَالَ يَزِيدُ أَخْبَرَنَا سُفْيَانُ عَنْ زَيْدٍ الْعَمِّيِّ عَنْ أَبِي الْعَالِيَةِ قَالَ اجْتَمَعَ ثَلَاثُونَ مِنْ أَصْحَابِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فَقَالُوا أَمَّا مَا يَجْهَرُ فِيهِ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِالْقِرَاءَةِ فَقَدْ عَلِمْنَاهُ وَمَا لَا يَجْهَرُ فِيهِ فَلَا نَقِيسُ بِمَا يَجْهَرُ بِهِ قَالَ فَاجْتَمَعُوا فَمَا اخْتَلَفَ مِنْهُمْ اثْنَانِ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كَانَ يَقْرَأُ فِي صَلَاةِ الظُّهْرِ قَدْرَ ثَلَاثِينَ آيَةً فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الْأُولَيَيْنِ فِي كُلِّ رَكْعَةٍ وَفِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الْأُخْرَيَيْنِ قَدْرَ النِّصْفِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ وَيَقْرَأُ فِي الْعَصْرِ فِي الْأُولَيَيْنِ بِقَدْرِ النِّصْفِ مِنْ قِرَاءَتِهِ فِي الرَّكْعَتَيْنِ الْأُولَيَيْنِ مِنْ الظُّهْرِ وَفِي الْأُخْرَيَيْنِ قَدْرَ النِّصْفِ مِنْ ذَلِكَ.

Yazid told us: al-Mas'udi informed us, from Zayd al-Ammi, from Abu Nadra, from Abu Sa'id. Yazid [also] said: Sufyan informed us, from Zayd al-Ammi, from Abu al-'Aliya, who said: Thirty of the Companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, gathered and said: As for what the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, recited aloud, we know it; but what he did not recite aloud we should not measure by what he recited aloud. He said: So they gathered, and no two of them differed that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, used to recite in the noon prayer about thirty verses in each of the first two rak'ahs, and in the last two rak'ahs about half of that; and in the afternoon prayer he recited in the first two about half of what he recited in the first two rak'ahs of the noon prayer, and in the last two about half of that.
