Hasan ibn Musa and Ahmad ibn Abd al-Malik told us, both saying: Zuhayr told us - Ahmad ibn Abd al-Malik said in his version: Zubayd ibn al-Harith al-Yami told us - from Muharib ibn Dithar, from Ibn Buraydah, from his father, who said: We were with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, when he stopped with us, we being with him nearly a thousand riders. He prayed two rak'ahs, then turned to face us with his eyes streaming with tears. Umar ibn al-Khattab stood up before him, offering his father and mother as ransom for him, saying: O Messenger of Allah, what is the matter with you? He said: I asked my Lord, Mighty and Majestic, for permission to seek forgiveness for my mother, but He did not permit me, so my eyes shed tears out of mercy for her from the Fire. And I had forbidden you three things: I forbade you from visiting graves, so visit them, for their visitation reminds you of good; I forbade you from eating the meat of sacrificial animals after three days, so eat and keep as much as you wish; and I forbade you from drinking from certain vessels, so drink from whatever vessel you wish, but do not drink anything intoxicating.
