Zayd ibn al-Hubab told us: Husayn told us: Abdullah ibn Buraydah told me, from his father: that a black slave-girl came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, after he had returned from one of his military expeditions, and said: I had vowed that if Allah brought you back safely, I would beat the tambourine before you. He said: If you made that vow, then do it; but if you did not, then do not. So she began to beat it. Abu Bakr came in while she was beating it, and someone else came in while she was beating it, then Umar came in. She then hid the tambourine behind her back, though she was veiled. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Indeed, the devil fears you, O Umar. I was sitting here and these others came in, but when you came in, she did what she did.
