Abu al-Nadr narrated to us: 'Abd al-Hamid ibn Bahram al-Fazari narrated to us, from Shahr ibn Hawshab — 'Abd al-Rahman ibn Ghanm narrated to us — that Abu Malik al-Ash'ari gathered his people and said: 'O community of the Ash'aris, gather together and bring together your women and your children — I will teach you the prayer of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, as he prayed for us in Madinah.' So they gathered and brought together their women and their children. He then performed ablution and showed them how to perform ablution, enumerating the ablution to its proper places, until, when the shade had shifted back and the shadow had shortened, he stood and gave the call to prayer. He arranged the men in the nearest row, arranged the children behind them, and arranged the women behind the children. Then he established the prayer, stepped forward, raised his hands and said the takbir, then recited the Opening of the Book and a surah, saying them quietly. Then he said the takbir and bowed (ruku'), saying 'Subhan Allahi wa bihamdih' (Glory be to Allah and praise be to Him) three times, then said 'Sami' Allahu liman hamidah' (Allah hears whoever praises Him) and stood up straight. Then he said the takbir and fell in prostration. Then he said the takbir and raised his head. Then he said the takbir and prostrated. Then he said the takbir and rose up standing. So his takbirs in the first rak'ah numbered six takbirs, and he said the takbir when he stood up for the second rak'ah. When he finished his prayer, he turned his face towards his people and said: 'Remember my takbirs and learn my bowing and my prostration, for this is the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, which he used to pray for us at this hour of the day.' Then, when the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had finished his prayer, he turned his face towards the people and said: 'O people, listen, understand, and know that Allah, Mighty and Majestic, has servants who are neither prophets nor martyrs, whom the prophets and the martyrs envy for their gatherings and their nearness to Allah.' Then a man from the Bedouin Arabs came from the farthest part of the people and beckoned with his hand towards the Prophet of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: 'O Prophet of Allah, people among the people who are neither prophets nor martyrs, whom the prophets and the martyrs envy for their gatherings and their nearness to Allah — describe them for us,' meaning: characterize them for us. The face of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, was pleased at the Bedouin's question, and the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: 'They are people from various origins and scattered tribes, between whom there were no close ties of kinship; they loved one another for the sake of Allah and were sincere with one another. Allah will place for them, on the Day of Resurrection, pulpits of light, and will seat them upon them, and will make their faces light and their garments light. The people will be terrified on the Day of Resurrection, but they will not be terrified, and they are the friends of Allah, upon whom there is no fear, nor shall they grieve.'
