قَالَ قَرَأْتُ عَلَى عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ عَنْ مَالِكٍ وَحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاقُ أَخْبَرَنَا مَالِكٌ عَنْ أَبِي حَازِمٍ عَنْ سَهْلِ بْنِ سَعْدٍ أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَاءَتْهُ امْرَأَةٌ فَقَالَتْ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ إِنِّي قَدْ وَهَبْتُ نَفْسِي لَكَ فَقَامَتْ قِيَامًا طَوِيلًا فَقَامَ رَجُلٌ فَقَالَ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ زَوِّجْنِيهَا إِنْ لَمْ يَكُنْ لَكَ بِهَا حَاجَةٌ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَلْ عِنْدَكَ مِنْ شَيْءٍ تُصْدِقُهَا إِيَّاهُ فَقَالَ مَا عِنْدِي إِلَّا إِزَارِي هَذَا فَقَالَ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ إِنْ أَعْطَيْتَهَا إِزَارَكَ جَلَسْتَ لَا إِزَارَ لَكَ فَالْتَمِسْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ مَا أَجِدُ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ الْتَمِسْ وَلَوْ خَاتَمًا مِنْ حَدِيدٍ فَالْتَمَسَ فَلَمْ يَجِدْ شَيْئًا فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ هَلْ مَعَكَ مِنْ الْقُرْآنِ شَيْءٌ قَالَ نَعَمْ سُورَةُ كَذَا وَسُورَةُ كَذَا لِسُوَرٍ يُسَمِّيهَا فَقَالَ لَهُ النَّبِيُّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ زَوَّجْتُكَهَا بِمَا مَعَكَ مِنْ الْقُرْآنِ.

It was read to Abd al-Rahman, from Malik — and Ishaq narrated to us: Malik informed us, from Abu Hazim, from Sahl ibn Sa'd, that a woman came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have given myself to you in marriage." She stood for a long while. Then a man stood up and said: "O Messenger of Allah, marry her to me if you have no need of her." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do you have anything to give her as a dowry?" He said: "I have nothing but this waist-wrapper of mine." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If you give her your waist-wrapper, you will sit with no waist-wrapper on yourself; so look for something else." He said: "I cannot find anything." He said: "Look, even if it is only a ring of iron." So he looked but could not find anything. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "Do you know anything of the Qur'an?" He said: "Yes, such-and-such surah and such-and-such surah," naming certain surahs. So the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: "I have married her to you for what you know of the Qur'an."
