Abdullah told us, my father told me, Abd al-Rahman ibn Mahdi and Abu Sa'id told us - they said, Za'idah told us, from Abd al-Malik ibn 'Umayr - and Abu Sa'id said: Abd al-Malik ibn 'Umayr told us - from Abd al-Rahman ibn Abi Layla, from Mu'adh ibn Jabal, who said: A man came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and said, "O Messenger of Allah, what do you say about a man who met a woman he did not know, and did with her everything a man does with his wife except that he did not have intercourse with her?" He said: Then Allah, Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "Establish prayer at the two ends of the day and in the early hours of the night; indeed good deeds do away with evil deeds" - the verse. He said: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him, "Perform ablution, then pray." Mu'adh said: I said, "O Messenger of Allah, is this for him specifically or for the believers in general?" He said, "Rather, for the believers in general."
