Abdullah told us, my father told me, Affan told us, Shu'bah told us, Abu Awn informed me, said: I heard al-Harith ibn Amr, the nephew of al-Mughirah ibn Shu'bah, narrating from some people among the companions of Mu'adh from the people of Homs, from Mu'adh, that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to Mu'adh ibn Jabal when he sent him to Yemen, and he mentioned: "How will you judge if a case is brought before you?" He said, "I will judge by the Book of Allah." He said, "And if you do not find it in the Book of Allah?" He said, "Then by the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." He said, "And if you do not find it in the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" He said, "I will exert my own judgment and spare no effort." He said: Then he struck my chest and said, "Praise be to Allah who has guided the messenger of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, to that which pleases His Messenger."
